LC & gas exchange

This is a picture of an LC with tubing type gas exchange filters.
It was not agitated.
Simply left alone in an incubator.
There is a healthy big ball of myc in the solution. (50/50 light dry malt & dry dextrose)
That is not the point.
The point is that myc grows thick & rapidly on the surface. Which, (IMHO) proves that gas exchange in an LC leads to optimal growth.

That is a mighty large healthy looking ball of myc. I believe your point is well made.

I'm not sure I follow...
No gas, no agitation - Bad?
Gas exchange, agitation - Good?

He's saying that gas exchange alone is sufficient to produce healthy LCs, even without agitation.

wow - I just spawned with a LC for the first time and was wonderin' how gas exchange might have helped. I'm on a hobo's budget right now, but I'll surely be doing something like that now. I'm surprised how easy it is to get the myc to the surface by just gently turning the LC's container.

they're supposed to be sunken; it's just that the myc don't need much encouragement to float. A few air bubbles get caught up in the myc. and, next thing you know, they're on the surface of the liquid.
I bet gas exchange (versus agitation) is the best way to go with a liquid culture.

maybe thats why my LC' always suck. I never have decent airflow!
Question for the smarties... does a LC need more FAE than a colonizing jar? im only wondering since a LC is almost pure food and maybe doest require as much air???

Any decent LC - with gas exchange. Left un-agitated. Will sooner or later get a myc mat on the surface.
Which is not a really GOOD thing. (unless you have a powerful stir plate & bar combo)
Because, the mat gets thick, spongy & will PLUG syringes. (because the mat becomes a fairly solid mass)
This is an LC, that is just beginning to form a mat.
This is a THICK LC, that was stirred every time a mat began to form.
This is what happens when, after a mat is formed, & you stir the LC. Mat is one tough SOB to break up.
This is about optimal mass in an LC.

delinquntes : nice -- I'm using honey water so my mycelia don't look quite as pretty white as your picture shows. I eyeballed the honey and overdid it with both jars, but they're now starting to clear up. I don't have access to a digi. cam right now, but I'll post some pics of my 2 LC jars tommorrow. I was lazy with my technnique on my second LC; I didn't flame-sterilize the needle between inoculations and I now have a slighty contaminated honey water jar. If the camera is good enough, it might show some folks what LC contaminations look like. I've been lurkin for a while, I've seen people ask about that before. I think my mycelia have a tendency to settle; whenever I pick 'em up to look, they start floatin', just like that.

The myc. look so soft and cottony in plain 'ol jar LC's; I never would have guessed the mats would get so tough with a little air .

I just did 6 baby bottle of Honey and I am not impressed with the sludge in the bottom. I will either migrate to Agars recipe or back to Karo. I'm not sure yet...I am waiting for the results to come in on the Honey yet. I'll keep you posted.

about 12 hours -- we'll see how well the camera does, it's an old-school mavica, so it's not the best, but I'll make do. I'm working with tiny Bell brand jam jars with only one clear area where the label is supposed to go. I mostly hope to point out the color of the contamination; it's a light pea or kelly green compared to the mycelia.

That would be interesting to see. I took those shots with a Fuji 2600 (older) and I lit the jar with a flashlight from the bottom. I killed the flash, set it to manual and held really still.

Here are some pics of my contaminated LC.
if you look closley. one is PINK.
This pink produces some nasty shit. it's hard to see butr these are wcontaminated syringes. Can't even tell. (that's what i hate about Lc's)
This is a form of a lipstick bacteria, produces this.
