Honey vs Karo - An observation.

I ran an LC with Karo, and was very pleased with the clarity of the mixture. I am also pleased that it produced viable mycelium.
I just layed down 6 Baby Bottles with Honey, and I am less than impressed with the amount of "gunk" that appears to be floating in the bottles. Well, actually, it settles out if I do not shake them. Is this a normal thing, I asked myself? Who cares as long as I get LC.
Just an observation by me, not a question per se.

Most honey LC's do that gunk thing.
I prefer light dry malt & dry dextrose. (think beer brewing supply store)
1 tablespoon each, to a quart of boiling water. Filter through coffee filters into 2 quart jars. (or, however many BB's) PC 15 to 18 minutes @ 15 psi

Karo is just hydrolyzed cornstarch (man made dextrose) and a little imatation vanilla, agar is right use DME dry malt extract its very easy to get,it has proteins that the mycelia will need to make new cell walls to grow and has minerals and vitamins there is non of that in Karo just dextrose

i usually use karo and i like it..i just tried using honey because I heard that there would be more mycelium growth is there any truth to that? and is the gunk gonna effect anything?

Actually the mycelium seems to love the gunk,I swear it is actually beneficial as if it gives it something to cling to and just get thicker and thicker

i think you will find the honey to well outperform the karo
i agree with Blutjager that the gunk is beneficial, if anything - you'll find the mycelium anchors to it, and eats up some of it suggesting that it has nutritional value - though it makes for confusion to the "untrained eye"...
not all honey is created equal, i have a generic store brand right now that never leaves me with any gunk, and performs good enough that i don't feel its even worth my effort to seek out malt/dex. your mileage may vary.
if the gunk bothers you, prepare it in a way like agar describes. warm your water so that the honey dissolves easier, mix well, then pour it through a coffee filter on the way into the jar... problem solved!

Assuming your either forgot the "R" or the spell check fucked you over as its been known to do than yes clover honey is the stuff
I can see how honey LC could look strange and even contaminated to someone who is only used to karo, sometimes even the mycelium takes on a tannish/brownish tint.. As a general rule as long as the liquid surrounding it is clear(Not completely clear but you should be able to see through it) and not cloudy you are more than likely OK,if you really think its suspect just shoot up a test jar or two and wait and see so as you don't waste a ton of spawn. I have only made a bad LC a few times and every time it was readily apparent without even having to shoot up anything,it just looked wrong to began with
