Thanks for the wonderful comments guys.  It gives me reassurance that going all the way with the scissors wasn't such a bad thing.  I really do like my hair without the dreads, but I do so wish it was down to the middle of my back. 

It really took some guts to cut them off.  I mean, I started the dreads knowing that one day this would happen, tho not as soon as expected, but it was now or never!  It was starting to turn into a rat's nest of sorts :tongue:

It is possible to try to 'uncomb' the dreads and condition them, but I'm sure it would take DAYS, and the resulting hair would be a big fuzzball. Constantly teasing and then trying to unlock the dreads = tons of split ends and broken hairs. You'd prolly end up ripping out a lot of hair in the process, too.

I don't know if this could happen on hair that's been locked up for many years.

ahh it must feel good to be able to scratch your scalp properly again!! haha

i've had my dreds for about 2 1/2 years now, maybe 3 years if you include the preliminary 'knotted mess' stage :P (i let them form themselves, basically).

recently the thought of cutting them off has been getting closer to reality. it makes working and getting a job easier, and damn they are getting heavy! but i just can't bring myself to do it, they are a part of my body now, it would be like chopping off a leg!
