I've recently been wondering what I would need to record myself singing onto my computer. I don't want to get into anything to pricey. Just something to sound descent enough. I have a el-cheapo microphone from radioshack, cost about $30 a year or so ago. Toss it & buy something better?
From what I understand I'll need a mixer or something to hook the mic to and then to the computer.
I don't know how to use it yet, but I have Cakewalk Sonar Producer Edition. Is this a good program?

a microphone other than that im not sure, i belive a few sound cards have an input port for a regular mic, but maybe not.
(ps, after showering, take the mic into the shower and sing in the shower. it will create a sexy lil resonace (however you spell it) effect. i belive its called the wall of sound :thumb up:

If you're serious about recording/singing it's a good idea to invest in a good microphone sometime. Most of those microphones need 'phantom power' that means that you need to plug them into a device that supplies the power. like most mixing consoles, microphone preamps and some soundcards.

the Shure mics discussed there sound like a good deal, you can probably find a good discount on them somewhere

yeah you need a decent sound card. look into the Audigy series, or if you're serious with $$ look at EMU or M-Audio. There are adapters to make your XLR (the plug on the end of a decent mic) go into a quarter-inch input, then I think Cakewalk can do the trick... I'm not familiar with it at all though.
The best mic for the price I think is an SM57, or an SM58. they are incredibly durable and diverse, with a clean open sound. How THAT signal sounds is up to you, your environment, and your mixing skills.

My advice is to set up a console studio, and not a computer one. It'll help you a lot if you are trying to get into producing at all.

I've been looking at the x-fi series sound cards. From what I've read they are a big upgrade from the audigy series. Looks like the Shure SM58 goes for around $100, that's not bad .
