Good microphone recommendations?
    #3986512 - 03/29/05 08:19 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I play electric keyboard mostly, I have two large keyboards. What sorts of microphones are good for indoor recording in a small room? right now I'm using a cheap old mp3 player "voice recorder" which gets the job done but is still pretty sucky in terms of quality. Correct me if I'm wrong but can't electric keyboards be recorded digitally? There are some audio output plugs in the back of it. Perhaps if I get some wires I could just plug it straight into my sound card? I would still probably prefer a good mic though so that I can play guitar and record that also. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

my advice would to be to invest in some cheap pro audio gear. something that would probally be really good for you is an "m-audio mobilepre". it will run you about $150 new and probally much less for a used (ebay you might get one for like $50). its a good soundcard and has something called "phantom power" on it. this is what you need to have for any respectable microphone to be used in a studio or recording enviroment.

i myself have an "akg c 3000 b" for all my recording purposes and it sounds golden but will also run you fucking anywhere from $200-300 new. however, this isnt always the case for all mics. a good mic might cost you say $100, not a bad investment either. try for a brand like "shure" because they have some of the finest mics ive ever tried.

what kinda keybaord are you using? perhaps we could find a way to settle this by going to your local radioshack and spending $4.

I have had success with SHURE mics for a very well priced instrument mic (they also sell the top-end stuff).

shure SM57> best mic for the price> i think about 89bucks.

does vocals or instruments well enough, can be used in almost any situation.

k....one thing... Shure 57's are industry standard for almost everything, get a serial pair (where the serial numbers are just one digit off of each other) when buying them. They do only run about 90 dollars, i have found some on Ebay for 30$. They are the most durable microphones ever, you can drop them from 20 feet on concrete and never bust them. Same with the 58's.
Phantom power is 48 volts of extra power which is used for condenser mics. UNless you are doing really serious recordings, you shouldnt ever shell out money for a condenser because a 57 can do the trick. Condensers are expensive, fragile and very moody (weather can even change their sound), but I would recommend getting a high end sound card, they are useful all the time, just make sure you get as many inputs on the card as possible.

Yes you can get an instrument chord and a 1/4 to 1/8 plug to get it into the Line In on your sound card. Record it with something free like Audacity. That will probably sound better for keyboards than micing them.
