h202 question
    #530032 - 01/24/02 09:55 AM (22 years, 9 months ago)

i have a 4 inch layer of horse dung/straw that is currently being colonized with 7 pf 1/2 puerto rican cakes directly in a 10 gallon rubbermaid container. last night i put my gloves on and mixed it up good to distribute everything and i poured a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution directly in the subsrtate. it bubbled and foamed like h202 does when it cleans. i know that over time the h202 is broken down into water and oxygen.
was this damaging to my mycelium?

with so much substrate and the length of time it will take to colonize i am concerned with contams setting in so if pouring h202 directly in the container is not a good idea then what is a good way to fight off contams ?

Hi Babe!
So far as I know H2O2 does not damage the mycelium. The mycelium will produce enzymes that protect it from the H2O2 while the H2O2 kills contams . The H2O2 then breaks down into O2 and H2O, both highly benificial for fruiting.....

A 3% straight solution will damage the mycellium, mix up a 10% diluted solution and use it to mist your casing. This will help to lower your contamination chances while it is colonizing.

Right... 100ml of 3% into 1 litre of clean water. Chances are your substrate is ok it would only damage the mycellium it came into first contact with. The damaged mycellium could also probably recover but would be weaker than the rest. It shouldn't pose a problem for you.
