Green mold question!
    #5290899 - 02/12/06 07:34 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I'm doing 12 PFTEK style jars (with minor changes) and so far have thrown out 2 of the jars to green mold, 2 more are sitting here but I decided to let them go on because the green mold patch in both cases was very small and the mycelium was already half done colonizing. The question I have is: When the mycel overtakes the green mold and the green mold disappears from the outside edges of the jar, does that mean its now safe to use? How can I test to be sure?

Just throw it away. The majority of the mold will be internal.

If you have mycelium that will overgrow green mold then i need a print from that...lol its wishfull thinking, green allways wins...
And just because the green that you can see is small that doesnt mean that the inside of your cake isnt loaded with it.

Koh Samui. One cake was probably 1/4 overgrown with green mold (the uncolonized part of the cake) and the mycelium overgrew it completely. I cut open the cake before it had completely won though (there was a small patch right below the surface but thats it) so I ended up throwing it out. I have another one that LOOKS like its completely overgrown the green mold, it literally pushed it completely out of the cake. I'll cut that one open tomorrow or the next day when I'm sure the mycelium is done colonizing and let you know what I find.

Actually, no I won't. I cut the cake open today (it had completely colonized a couple of days ago) and there is no sign of green mold ANYWHERE. I'm going to try to use the larger 2 pieces of the cake to grow a few shrooms off of and see what becomes (probably in a separate grow box though due to continuing concerns of contam).

Dunking and rolling tonight first though!
