Air-sanitizing incense
    #5287568 -

Hey, I was reading today about how dragons blood resin kills germs and bacteria in the air when its burnt. could be useful

Most contams cannot readily float through the air. When there is dust, smoke, or any other particulate matter wafting around the room, it gives bacteria, molds, and spores a free ride to your culture.

Don't confuse the snake-oil vendor's sales pitch with aseptic methods for mushroom cultivation. Burn dragon's blood resin after your harvest to ward off evil spirits and 'purify' your soul. Until then, use Oust or Lysol.

Lol, true that. That is my favorite resin, btw.

Would anyone like to scientifically consider the potential of fogging a room with the smoke before working in it? I guess you figure the hot incense itself will create air circulation. I'm not sure if it would be a big deal, but assume the incense is removed before work is started. Would it provide any advantage (of course when combined with normal sanitation methods)?

Smoke is made of particles, but if these particular particles (hah) are strongly antibacterial, it might outweigh the possibility of them carrying a contam that might not be effected by the antibacterial effects.

I dont recommend this as a tried and true sanitation method, but it would be cool to get some data-based feedback, rather than assuring that bleaching the whole place will do a better job.

In regards to dragons blood, the snake-oil vendors are the guys selling it to high schoolers as opium. hehe. I know a guy who swears by it though. He smokes it all the time. *sigh*

Pinon is my favorite resin. Smells like burning a pure essential oil. You woudlnt know it was a smoke.

Save your money and build the ozone generator in my signature. It will kill all contaminants in your room. Do a search for ozone and bacteria in google...you will see.

****warning...it will kill you too, so use caution.******

Oust also sprays particles in the air just like insense, how do you know they dont work in similar ways. Both are products you put into the air that claim to reduce nasties.

I dont think it could hurt, but it would be a difficult thing to test if it does. Oust HAS been proven to work, I'll give it that...thats what I use myself...however I would not say this insense does nothing, or makes it worse.

The difference is that the atomized particles in Oust and Lysol are mostly 70% ethanol with minor amounts of either quaternary ammonium compounds (Oust antibacterial) or mono/di/tri/quad ethylene glycols (Lysol antibacterial). These are known, tested microbicides. The competition is fierce for the most effective sprays, and the big manufacturers (Dow, Dupont, etc.) hire the primo scientists. Most sprays are available in several versions, so you have to be careful that you don't buy the ones that only claim to be a 'sanitizer'. Get the kind with antibacterial mentioned on the can, and have long, nasty sounding chemical ingredients. These sprays are not very toxic to humans, but use caution, anyway.

I'm not a chemist, so I can't give you detailed mechanisms for the microbicidal effect, but in general, water/alcohol solutions, quats, and glycols all attack contams by penetrating the lipid (fatty) envelopes of microbes, and then denaturing (unfolding) the proteins inside the cells of the microbe. The atomized droplets from these sprays are liquids, which cling to the solid particulates carrying microbes through the air. Effective microbicidal action requires a few to tens of seconds of contact by the agent. Being denser than the dust that germs ride on, the liquid droplets help settle the solid particulates out of the room air. And voila, dead nasties on the floor, not in the air.

Now for Dragon's blood, or whatever it's called, there are a few problems that come to mind. First, is that when I checked for studies that confirm its microbicidal properties, I couldn't find anything substantive that deal with the properties of the smoke resulting from burning it as incense. Despite the marketing hype that magically transformed its properties as a germicide in solid form, to its smoke particulate form, my first suspicion is that these properties are destroyed completely by combustion. Even if not, then since the smoke particulates are solid, they have no significant ability to cling to the 'other' dust particles that microbes are floating on. No contact time, no interaction. And no ability to settle the dust. In fact, unless its microbicidal activity survives combustion, you will be dumping a vast quantity of smoke particles into the air that can act as a taxicab for microbes to float around where you certainly don't want them.

I've got no contructive input of my own, but I must say mogur, that's a pretty good analysis/interpretation of the mechanisms at work here. I wonder if anyone, especially the maker[s] of the resin, is/are able to show proof that combustion has no ill effect on its antibacterial properties.
