Hey guys, a friend of mine is growing shrooms and seems to be getting alot of contams, anyways, when his jars contam he takes what little uncontaminated mycelium is in the jar and throw it in a small casing with verm/peat moss. anyways, it seems to collinize so quickly, i was wondering if he could just keep casing it until it was huge then pin it, and why don't we use peat/verm for a substrate instead of brf etc.? if it loves to grow on it so much, is there much less nutrients in the peat/verm?

Cakes are a neccessary first step, as they get you used to growing with the help from the cake's natural resistance to contams and general ease to grow.
3nt3r is right..you are asking for disaster being so unsterilized, and there is no reason to do it this way.
In addition to his post here are some other things to help sterility:
wear a surgeons mask ....the biggest pool of bacteria in your house is none other than your own mouth.
use the oven tek
and like 3nt3r said--lysol!

Peat/verm or Coco-fiber are non-nutritive layers..... merely to re-hydrate or replenish water in the cakes. Mycelia needs nutrients to grow in and to fruit. Rye.... Brown rice flour.... etc

peat moss has no nutrients... it is not a fertilizer. It retains moisture for garden and indoor plants..it is on the acidic side..so you should add some crushed oyster shell from your local nursery .

I would disagree when people say that peat has "no nutrients". In fact "Peat is intrinsic to all mires and bogs; it is the conserved mass of undecayed plant remains--mainly moss, but also including grass roots, tree bark, seeds, and other plant materials (Masing 1997). Peat has a loose structure and is comprised of more than 50% carbon. Various species of Sphagnum make up peat mosses."
So I would argue that because peat is made up of organic non decomposed material, it will contain lignans, cellulose, and other nutrients left in that plant matter. So apart from it being just a casing substrate, I do believe that mushrooms probably use it as a growing medium as well....of course this is just my opinion. I also just offer it as friendly info, because I believe it is important to be informed, and informed correctly.
On another note and back to the original post, Enter is right but a little harsh in his critizism about sterile techniques. I think that it is important for mushroom cultivators to use sterile techniques where ever possible...but I also think that many people go to extremes. I know that my apartment is not the most sterile place, nor do I go overboard but I do use rubbing alcohol, a microwave, H202 and occasionaly an open and warm oven to aid me in keeping contams down. My record is pretty good so far with only about 10 percent contams, and most of that I can salvage by removing contams early on and spraying down with a peroxide solution...sorry this got long, but I think it was important.
Cheers...and good luck with all of your grows.
