I bought some of those black trays from home depot that are 2 1/2 in. deep. Are those going to be deep enough to case?

I read that the fruits will grow larger if given a deeper substrate, is that really true. Also what about the bottom layer, think it is going to make a big difference?
bottom - 1/2 in middle - 1 1/2 in top - 1/2 in

Well, you want your substrate layer to be as deep as possible. Your setup will work, and will probably provide you with a good harvest, but in the end bigger is better.
My cat prefers a 4" spawned substrate with a 1" casing in a 12"x18" bin (864 sq. in. of substrate).

Fana, do you use a bottom layer?
Is the deeper substrate layer going to produce more flushes, Bigger fruits, higher potency?
Do you seem to have more problems with contams with the deeper substrate?

There is kinda a ongoing debate over bottom casing, if your bottom casing the moisture level of the bottom casing is important if you can get it right it does add to the moisture that your casing can draw on and increase your 2 n 3 flushes, but on the flip side it opens up another angle for contams and ones that you will not be able to see, my friend has used both moist vermiculite and carboard (experiment here, cut a peice of cardboard to size, nuked the cardboard and soaked in water with bit of peroxide in a sterile environment) accually the cardboard casing produced more but this was hardly a controled environment, both worked fine with no contams. Either way works, if your new to growing i'd suggest no bottom casing.

He used card board...thats cool, I guess what ever works. Do you always nuke your casing soil before casing your substrate and or topping your mycelium. I was going to use verm, peat, & oyster shell for casing soil.

I was trying to figure out a quicker way to sterilize the casing, not so much for the initial casing layer but for topping the mycelium after colonization.
