Poppies by the Swamp
    #5232538 -

I decided this year that it was time to try my hand at growing some poppies. It is my second attempt though last year was a total failure. Due in no small part to store bought seeds from home depot. (That's what I'm blaming it on anyhow.)

So, before we were fully through winter I went ahead and prepared my plot. Fertilized it, adjusted the ph, added vermiculite and tilled several times. This was compact swamp muck before I began working on it. Below is a photo of the freshly tilled patch.

Soon afterwards I set up my irrigation and sowed a number of gigantheum seeds by simply tossing them onto the patch and leaving them to sprout.

I soon encountered problems though, mostly from fire ants hauling my seeds off. I acted quickly but not before they had gotten quite a few stashed away. So there are several spots around the edge of my garden where a few dozen sprouts came up within a square inch. Later I had some problems with armadillos digging holes and destroying the young sprouts followed shortly after by a horse which got into the plot and trampled a few. They are still doing fine though and with any amount of luck there won't be too many more problems, if any.

The below photos are from last week.

Hopefully I'll get to enjoy some beautiful flowers later this year.

Damn! You know such a large patch may draw some attention. There's no way you could claim those are purely for aesthetic purposes. It looks to me like you are manufacturing opium.

Perhaps you intend to sell the pods to florists shops. Or maybe it's a seed crop.

I didn't think it was too large of a grow and living in a rather rural and agricultural area I doubt it will draw any attention. The only people who would see it are my immediate neighbors and I'm on good terms with them. It helps that there is a vegetable garden there too which I have kept for several years. (Not Pictured)

Once it gets warmer I intend to have morning glory all along that fence line and some sunflowers along the front of that poppy patch.
I also have Shasta daisies along the right side of the patch. It should be very pleasing to look at if it all goes well. Maybe I'll find a spot for some blue flax that I have a ton of seed for.

Regardless, it is a seed grow; I'd like to collect most of the seed and dump half of it into the free seed trading thread.

My seedlings just came up outdoors. I'm thinking of transfering them soon to a new location. Transplanting is fine as long as you dig deep enough not to cut the roots while you move the ball of soil, right?

No! Poppies hate being transplanted. Even when the greatest care is taken, they usually die if you move them.

Not if the sunlight and temps are kept the same. If the roots aren't harmed in the transplant I see no reason it would not acclimate.

They're getting bigger, though I have lost a few more to pests the majority of them are doing well.

Yeah, but it's impossible not to damage the roots. I've tried too many times, and they just don't take to transplants at all. Maybe if their roots weren't more than 3/4 of an inch long it might work, but after that they get long and are so weak that they just fall apart no matter how delicate you are.  :smirk:

All I was saying is that if during the transplant you take the entire root system and at least a good buffer zone of root free dirt around the root system, with the plant, than you can move them no problem. I don't see why this would be an issue when they are smaller than half a foot tall and the root system is still relatively small.

I have an important question. The temperature tonight is supposed to dip to 29 F. Should I run the sprinklers in my garden or let the poppies to themselves?
Normally we don't get a freeze this late in FL so I wasn't expecting cold temps to give me any problems. Will they survive a few hours of freezing temperatures?

Yeah, like take a shovel full of sprouts and dirt and move it to a small hole somewhere. It works great. Get some really bright cool East area and watch them fuckers take off running. They only really need fairly loose soil. To transplant almost anything remember the cardinal rule - move it to better conditions and it will often reallign.

weed out the small ones. make sure there are no poppies closer than 6 inches for best results.
what matters in the end is pod size and alkaloid content, not number of plants.
aslo, sprinkle down lime regularly.

That's a pretty good looking plot of poppies.
On that note I do need to thin mine out a bit, provided tonight's freeze doesn't wreak havoc with my garden.

My seedlings survived frost no problem. Maybe not a HARD FREEZE, though. If they all die, I won't be too concerened. Spring is close by.

And good luck with that plot you are growing, looks pretty sick.

once poppes get a few leaves they can survive a total freeze.
realistically they die by running their lifespan, one time i planted in mid summer, the plant became a cabbage the size of a large beach ball.
if i had allowed it to stay in the ground it sould have survived the winter, dummy me tried to bring it inside, end of story. the root was as big around as my arm. leaves were a foot wide and three feet long. and it had many separate heads forming, all in a tight compact green mass.
i SO wish i ihad let it overwinter under the snow.
the pods would have been like softballs
