I'm thinking about growing some poppies inside. Which would be better for poppies? Metal Halide, High pressure Sodium, Fluorescent. And how many watts should I have to get to plant say 5 plants. thanks.

I also have a Four Foot green thumb Fluorescent grow light>>50 inches wide by 30 inches tall... two 40 watt, 48 inch Agrosun Fluorescent Plant Grow Tubes. Would these grow two or so plants? What would be better under these lights? Tazmanian Strain. Hens and Chicks. Giganteum Strain. >>Also have a 4 - tier greenhouse//grow rack but I don't think you can grow poppies in the winter with it, can you?

I would use the fluos for the seedling, and then pass to the metal halide... I think that with 175 you could grow about 3-4 plants, and keep another 2 plants under the fluos... be carefull, when the flower, the grow up very quickly, so just count enough place to take the lamps up... you can grow poppies in a green house during winter, but that's want I heard so I can't confirm... I'm not sure that they would flower though... you could start some seedling in peat pots and transfert them outside when they get big enough...

for a 175 watt setup i say 4x4 feet at the biggest seeds are ez to start as long as the temps are cooler or try this trick. place the poppy seed in the fridge for 2 weeks then plant sprouts should come up in 3 days till a full week for some.
Poppys dont like to be transplanted. I ve done it sussfully about a 80%. The other 20% died withing 3 days So start them in:
1- peat pellets with the dome off and when sprouts start comming up say at least 1 per peat pellet put the dome on. the Poppys will grow faster under high humity and lots of light. take the pellets and transplant them in to containers good for the poppy life time. And dont ferget to harden them off. If planting into the earth or contailers. One peoplem i had i started my poppies under fluos they r-e-a-c-h for the light and got to tall and fell over. This is a big proplem if you going to move the plant outside.
2- Start them in big containers(one method i use in 2 gallon containers about 30 of them) mix the seed and sand or soil and toss on the pot filled with loose soil. Them MIST only. You will have to mist the plant from top unless using bottom watering. But dont disturbed the seedling. Most of my seeds germ. in semi shade about 4 feet from a 430 watt HPS light and did fine. Once germ place under light so you dont make the reach for the light. Misting for 3 weeks untill it got 2 true leaves. by them the plant will not
End results i planted 30, 2 gallon pots.I started the seeds under flours and 430 hps. but the best is 430. I keep the some plants in 6 inch pots thined out till 3 plants each too. keep under a dome for 25 days eill 4-5 inches high the plant stated to bolt i moved it to a 2 gallon pot and did fine it now outside and at 65 days has 6 buds some open to flower. I used Taz seed for this one. Taz has good size pod but a little on the small side, very potent, lots of seed, and very fast growing.
Once the plant has bolted it be carfull with the light they grow very fast while bolting.
