tasmanian poppy
    #2594324 - 04/23/04 09:54 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

stumbled upon some tasmanian poppy seeds which are germinating in a seedling starter right now, and a friend plans on planting in their garden very soon. Garden gets good light, he plans on watering every day (is this too much?), and he lives in the Northeast, where night-time lows are currently in the 40's (degees Farenheit) and daytime highs are in the 70's. Of course these temps will go up as spring continues and moves into summer. Relative humidity in this area is generally pretty high.

(1)Any advice/experience growing this or a similar type of poppy?

(2)What he can expect in terms of growth cycle?

(3)How long till harvesting time?

(4)Any special care the poppies may need?

(5)Is there a good site where a friend could learn if and how it would be possible to make opium from the poppy flowers? (If you could provide a brief description, that would be fine too).

Thanks!
matt

i disagree that poppies transplant fine but you can of course transplant just be careful. and starting poppies indoors and transplant them out is a waste of time anyway
poppies grows fine, you just need to throw the seeds where you want them more or less. you dont need to manually water them every day outdoors either, and when it comes to spacing i say give them some space if possible maybe as much as a feet between, like most other plants, if they grow to close some plants will dominate others and steal nutrients.

a good site would be poppies.org to learn how to both grow poppies and make opium
