I just dont get it..

Why do people who know what organic food really is (getting over the hippyfood taboo), still chose conventional foods? The benefits of organic foods on your body and the environment are remarkable.

I eat occasionally at non-organic restaurants and would easily choose an organic restaurant instead if there were such a thing around here. But other than that, all the food I eat at home is organic. As much as I'd like to, I'm not trying to bash on non-organic eaters with post. I am seriously curious about the results!

It's tough to get good, cheap organic food. Luckily we have a Trader Joe's in town, although it's still like half an hour away driving and I'm sure plenty just prefer to walk a block to Kroger - where yeah, there's organic food, but it is more expensive. I bet if they knew a few fun facts about the production of nonorganic food, some would be willing to make that change, but for some it would still just be a hassle

A friend of mine is a raw vegan, he peaked my interest with organic food, but in reality I only eat about 10% organic, it is pretty inconvenient and expensive to buy all organic.

It sucks to know all the crap I am ingesting, but at least I know, and can make small strides to change.

The price on organic foods are insane, especially meat. The veggies aren't to much higher in price, but the meat is insane its nearly double the normal price here.

Nope, don't eat organic. Too expensive and there is little objective evidence indicating that its better for me.

I definitely avoid large-scale, commercially produced dairy and meat products. I have thought that they are disgusting ever since I read "Fast Food Nation" and I don't want to be eating something that is full of the pain and stress of an animal. It is better to eat less meat anyway, so I'd rather pay more for less meat that is produced under more humane conditions because it tastes better, too. For dairy, I buy from a family farm that sells their stuff all over NY, which I don't think is certified organic but they are humane and don't use hormones or unnecessary antibiotics.

As for eggs...there are few things that horrify me more than a factory-farmed egg; the thin shell, the runny white and the pale, sad-looking yolk are all signs of an unhealthy chicken. Real eggs, where the chicken is cage-free and is fed grain, have thicker shells, bright yellow yolks and the whites are not watery. They also taste a million times better and almost never have salmonella.

So yes, organic food is more money, but for food produced by animals, I won't buy anything else, cause eating all the garbage they put in there is really bad for you (eating bovine growth hormone that is in milk and meat can give you cancer and factory-farmed chickens are fed animal by-products, which is how mad cow disease started in cows so god knows what it does to chickens.)

There are ways to make organic food cheaper, but it really does depend on where you live and what kind of a demand there is for organic products. Whole Foods supermarket iws generally a crazy rip-off, but their store brand "365" is a real bargain, they have organic butter and milk for not much more than regular, the meat at WF is also worth the money in terms of quality/price ratio--and their frozen foods, olive oil, whole grains and other bulk foods are are also well-priced for high-quality organic stuff.
Another tip, go to farmers markets, you can get lots of stuff there that is not certified organic but if you talk to the farmer they will tell you if the stuff is produced small scale and is free of toxins.
And, most importantly, buy produce in season and avoid anything prepared or overly packaged! You are paying for packaging and the advertising that the company made to get you to buy that shit. Just skip the whole center of the grocery store, all the real food is on the periphery.

i pretty much buy only organic groceries. however, i also eat at restaurants, and except for a few, most don't use organic produce.

the health benefits are clear, in my mind and experience - and the difference in the taste is undeniable.

Auto-Summary
The post argues against non-organic farming and consumption, citing environmental degradation, soil depletion, increased pesticide use, harm to wildlife, human health issues, and animal welfare concerns. Organic farming is presented as a superior alternative, providing healthier produce and a more sustainable approach to agriculture. The author emphasizes that there are no benefits to non-organic products beyond cost and availability, and encourages a shift towards organic options for personal and collective well-being.

Well I'm definately not for telling people what they can or can't ingest into their own bodies, but when someones choice affects other people negatively, then I have something to say.. and yes, your choice to eat non-organically DOES have a negative affect on the well being of everyone, and I'll explain why. The following is an explanation of what organic food is and what impacts it has on your health and the health of the environment. If you are so close-minded that you won't even read this, then you seriously need to do some self-evaluating.

Conventional farming (not organic):
Until the 20th century, all farming was organic. What does this mean? Besides be much better tasting, organic means produce was grown without the use of chemical pesticides. Sustainable agriculture was practiced. This means that the plot of land that was farmed did not lose quality after each harvest, as it does with conventional farming. They accomplished this in a number of ways. They used natural pesticides such as crop rotation and natural insect predators (spiders, praying mantis, etc.). To keep the soil rich and reusable, they used compost and did NOT use chemical fertilizers. No-till farming was also practiced, but not 100% of the time.

In conventional farming practices the soil on the plot of land is tilled up. The topsoil is then broken up into smaller chunks and particles so that it is succeptable to wind and water erosion. There is nothing to hold the soil down. After each growing season is over, the topsoil (the soil with almost all the nutrients) is decreased. So as a substitue, chemical fertilizers were used to temporarily ensure soil "quality." When chemical fertilizers were first invented, they seemed like a great solution to poor soil quality. In fact, it is one of the worst things you can do to the soil. After each use of chemical fertilizers, the soil loses quality, and the farmer then puts more chemical fertilizers in the soil. It is a cycle that needs to be stopped or the soil will eventually lose all of it's potential. This is NOT an exaggeration.

Yet another flaw of non-organic farming methods are the use of pesticides. These pesticides are some of the deadliest toxins ever created, and they are being freely sprayed onto your produce. Yummy. When DDT was first invented, it was sprayed and vast quantities all over the fields, to kill off the insects. The first time they used it, it worked great. As time went on however, they noticed that the spray wasn't working anymore. Why? Because the few insects who were genetically resistant to the chemicals survived. With all of the non-mutants dead, the mutated insects mated and all of their offspring were now also immune to this chemical. At the amazing rate at which these insects multiply, it was only a short while before all of the insects were immune to the DDT. So the farmers kept spraying more and more DDT, thinking this would be the solution. Obviously, it was not. All it did was make the produce more toxic, further degrade the soil quality, and kill millions more animals. "Silent Spring" is a book about this practice and about all of the animals pesticides kill.

I watched a video in my environmental science class of a reporter interviewing a worker from a small worker- neighborhood nearby a non-organic apple orchard. The direction of the wind usually blew the pesticides into the town. Nearly 75% of all children born in this neighborhood had birth defects. In nearly every house in the town, there was someone dying from cancer or another disease, most under the age of 15. You are very ignorant if you think this is due to coincidence.

In short, Non-organic farming is terrible for the environment and your health. A lot of produce, such as bananas, is also now being grown with hormones so that they are not "puny."

Non-organic dairy and meat:
What exactly does this mean? Non-organic animals are raised under terrible conditions and are constantly fed antibiotics and hormones to increase production and profit. A non-organically raised chicken, be it for eggs or meat, never stands on real ground. They spend their entire life in those tiny cages you see stacked on semi-trucks.

After chopping down huge sections of the Amazon rainforest, South American cattle farmers place waaaay too many cows on a plot of land. The land is quickly overgrazed and will NOT grow back. It remains ruined. After being literally injected with hormones (in a syringe) the cow beefs up.. pun intended.

Another video I watched in my science class was about non-organic dairy. Thousands of cows were lined up, single-file, between two fences. The farmers drove by in a little cart, filled with big syringes. In these syringes, were hormones to increase utter size and milk production. They drove quickly down the line of cows, injecting the syringe into the each cow's lower back. These hormones, stretch the utter to make it bigger to hold more milk. As the utter stretches, beyond the normal limit, it leaks puss into the utter. Notice I said "into" not "out of." Yes that's right, in your non-organic milk, is a mixture of hormones, antibiotics, and cow utter puss. Mmmmm.

Non-organic cows are not fed any antibiotics, are freeranged, and are not injected with hormones. If you say that you enjoy the taste of Dairygold milk over organic milk, then what you are enjoying are the antibiotics, the hormones, and the puss. Once you get over your own insecurities and your self induced placebo, then you will learn that organic milk doesn't taste worse than non-organic. You have to approach it with an open mind.

Why am I so passionate about organic farming and dairy? It is simple. There is absolutely NO benefits of non-organic, besides cost and availability. But this teaches you not to be so wasteful with your food. I used to share the idea that organic food was disgusting, hippy food, and tasted terrible. These misconceptions were washed away when I approached my local food co-op with an open mind.

Non-organic food hurts the environment and the economy.
You people need to wise up and realize that your decision affects us all.
