What size FC for 2 Quarts of Popcorn?
    #5221876 -

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I ordered 3 different syringes from Sporlab, I'm making a Double Tub FC for each syringe/strain according to Wronguy's Tek (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=boxes&Number=4323984&page=0&fpart=1). If each syringe is good for 2 Quart Jars then that should mean that I have 2 Quart Jars of inoculated Popcorn to use in each FC. With this much Popcorn (and I'm not sure what I should mix it with, I don't have access to straw or manure) and the 50/50+ Casing, what size tubs should I use (I guess most importantly, what area should the bottom be)?

So wait, you plan on doing the double tub without actually having a bulk substrate? It was designed specifically for bulk substrates. And considering you're not going to use a bulk substrate and you only plan on using 2 quarts per tub, I don't think the double tub is for you. Wronguy said he used 6-7 quarts of colonized substrate as spawn alone, then the loads of shit mixed in with that. I don't understand how you plan to have a 5 inch deep substrate in a 30 gallon tub without going bulk.

I'm not sure you understand the concept of the double tub. It's not exactly a fruiting chamber per se, as in the box you place cakes or casings into that have controlled humidity. I believe what you should do, since you don't have to access to bulk, is just make regular sized casing and use a standard PmP setup w/ like either lava rocks & bubblewands, perlite, or a coolmist humidifier.

Standard PmP, thanks for the recommendation, I was wondering how I was going to get that to work... And I would have had something to mix my popcorn with, i just wasn't sure what i would go with yet (something along the lines of vermiculite or something i can find at osh). thanks again.

Actually, my other post was just updated and FooManShroom suggested that I use each syringe to inoc about 5 jars, so if I use smaller tubs than Wronguy (he said use between 19qt and 64qt and he's using 64qt, I wasn't going to go that big, I was going to use 44qt or less) would 5 quarts be sufficient? wWould 5 jars be fine for a 44qt, bigger, smaller?

Also, If I go Wronguy's tek, I'll need to mix the popcorn with something (my casing will be 50/50+), right? This is actually been very confusing for me, in some teks, the colonized substrate is placed between two layers of casing, and some it's mixed with something else and then cased with something like 50/50. I still can't seem to get down the names and references to which is which.

Magash has a tek in the archive with instructions for constructing a PmP using lava rocks and bubblewands. I haven't used it myself, but plenty of people have to good results. Although I believe the most common practice is just a rubbermaid/sterlite tub w/ like 2 inches of saturated perlite on the bottom. It works, I can vouch for it.

Hell they all work, or else so many people wouldn't stand by them.
So just base it off of what is most accessible to you.

What are you planning on using for your casing container? Pretty much any container that's about 3-6 inches high will work just fine. Anything from plastic shoeboxes to baking trays to sterlite dishtubs. Word of advice though, the old hands like RR and agar preach the benefits of a peat based casing layer as being better than a coir based one, so it would seem that the 50/50+ is the way to go.

I've read other posts that have said 1-2cc can inoc a quart, so in that case I can have even more than 7 quart jars for each tub (although i wont need it, so i can have a buffer incase some get contams), so size really isnt an issue anymore. I'm still wanting to go with Wronguy's tek since I can still pull it off with my popcorn. The only thing now is like you mentioned, I still don't have anything planned to mix with the popcorn (is this what's called spawn once it's mixed?). I could however instead of mixing, layer it like I've seen some teks with the popcorn in the middle, and the casing on top, in which case, what goes on the bottom, more of the casing material?

Oh yeah, I totally understand it gets really confusing, so I'll try to help out as much as I can. First let me explain one thing. You said that there are some teks talking about mixing the spawn with something else, then casing. Those are bulk grows, and that something else is usually straw, dung, or compost. This is done because those substrates are far more desireable for mushies to grow on, but often times spores have a hard time taking hold on them, so you use the grain on which the spore have already colonized into mycelium to spawn the bulk substrate. It's in that way that you can transfer the mycelium to the new, better growth medium.

So far as 5 quarts to one 44 qt tub, I'm still not sure that it would leave you with a substrate of desireable depth. I would recommend that you just use smaller containers, as I suggested in my last post. It'd be cheaper that way too.. instead of paying like 4-5 bucks for one casing container, you pay like 50 cents per. If you were to do these kinds of casings, just regular smaller ones, which I'd recommend for your situation, you'd use a regular PmP for maintaining humidity, and fan daily for FAE

The thing about wronguy's double tub, is that it's designed for bulk substrates which are capable of maintaining their own proper temp and humidity and whatnot without needing to fan.

If you're really that hell bent on doing a double tub, then maybe you should consider buying some Tenn Stud pre-pasteurized Hpoo?

I'd probably use 10lb per 44qt tub in that case, which would cost me $20 a tub for poo. I'd do it, but $20 for poo sounds rediculous to me since I used to live in a horse community (although we never had any) where there was free poo all over the place. I'd go back there when I visit my parents to pick some up around the stables, but pasturizing it here would be difficult as out kitchen is a community one and PCing is the only really incognito thing I can do in there.

Not that I saw that a 10cc syringe from Max is good enough for 5-12 quarts depending on how i want to ration, I can go as big as Wronguy (although I'd still only go 44qt at biggest, not 64).

I'll check out the teks you posted, but basically what I'm looking for in a FC is one like the aquarium with perlite except with a tub and perlite (since I'd rather case and not cake). I'm not wanting to get a HEPA, fan or anything like that if possible. I'll check out those suggestions though, thanks.

Right, you just want to do a standard terrarium w/ perlite RH source and have some casings sitting in there. That exactly what I had in mind. Now since that's the case, a large tub like 30 gallons would be totally fine for your FC, so that you can fit more casings inside there. You don't need to do big casings to get big yields, you can just do several smaller ones. like for example, say you use the plastic shoebox things, I'm guessing they'd be like 14l x 8w x 5h. That would be ideal for your situation. You could still have like a substrate depth of nearly 5 inches for your casings (which if I had to take a random guess, would be about 5-6 quart jars of popcorn, since you don't fill popcorn jars all the way up), and you could fit like 3 of those casings in one terrarium setup.

No HEPA, no fan, nothing extra. Just one big tub with like a 1.5 inch layer of saturated perlite, like 3 smaller containers for casings, your colonized grain, and your casing layer. Oh, you'll also have to cut a window in the lid of the lid and glue in some plexiglass so that you can expose your casings to a light schedule. That's everything. You'd fan 4-6 times daily, and wait for the flushes to come.

1. Instead of using a plexiglas window, could I instead have the 30 gallon tub clear? Maybe cover it with a blanket when I don't want it getting light?

2. Is there any certain section I should check out in Osh or Home Depot to get good sized trays/containers? I'm assuming they should be opaque.

3. Instead of fanning the CO2 out 4-6 times daily, could I instead use polyfill holes like in Wronguy's tek? That would reduce the risk of contams, right?

4. And as for the height of the trays, how much taller should the sides be than the top of the casing? And what's the maximum amount of popcorn I can use, say in case I happen to have more popcorn inoculated than I need. Whould it help to have more popcorn than neccesary like that?

5. There doen't need to be a layer of anything below the popcorn in the trays?

I can't thank you enough for helping me out here tiny_rabid_birds.

1. Yeah, you could use a clear one if you find one. There's really no need for a blanket, just either use a light on a timer or use the natural sunlight as the light source.

2. Um.. so far as the right sized trays, I'm not really sure. The plastic shoeboxes I was talking about are from Walmart. Often times people use those aluminum baking trays also. Some people complain about the myc eating into the aluminum, but you can remedy that by lining the tray w/ a plastic bag or some aluminum foil.

3. You could use holes w/ polyfill, but I don't think the FAE would be quite as effective as daily fanning. Maybe use the holes and just reduce the amount of fanning to twice a day?

4. Idealy, you want the casing mix height to be level with the container height, this way when the fruits start to grow and release CO2, it can kinda flow off the top of the casing and out of the container, rather than pooling inside the container. You can use as much popcorn as will fill the container to the point that there's like a quarter inch left for your casing layer. It couldn't hurt to have more popcorn than necessary, seeing as how you can use it down the road to perform G2G transfers to knock up a new batch. Plus, colonized substrate jars have a pretty long lifespan, so overcolonization doesn't really hurt anything. In fact, some people claim that it increases potency, but there's no real evidence.

5. No, there doesn't need to be a bottom casing layer. Some people prefer to have one in the thoughts that it helps to maintain a moist environment, but many many people have had success without one.

And it's no problem at all, I'm really only passing knowledge given to me by people here, so it's only fair. Good luck with your grows man.
