What to do with popcorn: spawn or just case?

My friend is trying popcorn for his first grain experiment. He has done some PF cakes before. For his first time would you reccomend he use it as spawn for straw or something, or just case the corn itself. If he can get the popcorn fully colonized he will try whatever is the reccomendation.

Spawn it definetly. Popcorn will produce poor yeilds on its own, straw would be much better.

Cool. I think my friend will try Shroomgod's straw tek then, unless you have another tek that would be more newbie friendly.

One more thing, how much straw should he use with 6 quart jars of spawn assuming they don't contam.

you can spawn anything from about 20:1 by volume up to 1:1 (commercial places do even more dilute)

it's a tradeoff between economy and speed. the faster it gets colonised, the less likely it is to get contamned. i do about 5:1 by volume.

6 quart jars should do you about 36 quarts of substrate (nearly 10 gallons). that's a lot - do it in about 3 tubs.

Sorry for the stupid questions that will follow Shirley, but my friend is still a noob.

1. What kind of tubs are you talking about? What size are they?

2. He would put layers of spawn and straw in these tubs, and fruit them in the tubs themselves after colonization?

Yes that is a very good idea Shakta - get like two of the 45 quart rubbermaids with lid, makes a perfect casing tray and terrarium in one. You should read this too, helped my friend a lot...

Cool, thanks for the help. If he pulls this off he will get 3 containers about that size, which appears to be about the size of a medium rubbermaid, and stack straw and spawn in them to about 4 inches deep or so. My buddy just sent this pic of one of his popcorn jars fresh out the PC. Is it to wet? He had to let it soak for 36 hours instead of 24 due to company last night. He went ahead and boiled it for an hour and drained for 30. There is condensation in the jar, but not sitting all in the bottom of it or anything. He would rather start over than be doomed from the start. His PF cake adventure has taught him patience, and he is addicted to this hobby now, more for the fun of growing than just consuming the results. :smile:

Just shake the jar up to distribute the condensation. As long as there is no standing water, they will be fine. A friend of mine once left a batch of popcorn on the stove simmering in a pot for far too long. They swelled up into marble sized kernals, split like hell (but no standing water). I told him I have doubts about them, but he used them anyway.

As of last time I checked with him they were 100%.

Cool. I will tell him to run with them then. The kernels along the edge of the jar are pretty wet, but there isn't a big puddle or anything. Thanks again for the help everyone.

I would suggest spawning 2 of those Rubbermaids and making each deeper. Depth is where it's at over cropping area, you will not be disappointed.
