You know what I always thought was funny? The boats greenpeace has been known to use in large packs during protests are almost all equipped with two-stroke engines. The kind that have been banned in many federally regulated bodies of water due to the fact that they just spit out all their rather sloppy exhaust into the water, along with some of the oil from each cycle.

So they go out to try and save the whales and wind up toxifying the water and using a hell of a lot of fossil fuel for their inefficient engines.

Of course this was back in the 90's ecology craze, they may have upgraded by now.

The other funny thing is that governments allready did actual tests where they crashed large aircraft into the concrete walls used in power plants, and determined that plane is not capable of doing functional damage to a nuclear plant reactor, none whatsoever.

And everybody who watches the news knows that.

Ya, those reactors have some seriously thick walls. But, i don't think a lot of people know this, because otherwise greenpeace wouldn't make commercials like that. They are relying on people's stupidity to oppose new nuclear power plants(which, by the way, are awesome. We need more).

Greenpeace sucks.  But that was a pretty sweet commercial.  It would've been better if they'd have had George Lucas finish it off with some spectacular special effects though! :smirk:

well, we need more, but not yet. There need to be some decent installations built to store the waste from them before any more should be built.

As it is governments have just been improvising places to hide the waste, it's kind of sad, actually.

That shit isn't trace levels of radiation, either. Some of the places where waste products are stored are so radioactive that a few minutes of exposure would leave you dead on the floor with your skin melting off of you.

Now, launching nuclear waste into the sun sounds like a nice convenient idea, right? But what happens if the rocket does a challenger? You now have an enormous explosion very high in the atmosphere that has scattered particles of radioactive waste into the winds. The death toll would be in the hundreds of thousands.

Neither NASA nor any respectable space agency is willing to launch bulk amounts of radioactive material with rockets. They are aware of that fact that space flight is mind boggling risky, and that's it's a sincere miracle that accidents don't happen more often than they do.

If a rocket explodes with all that shit in it, it would be one of the most effective dirty bombs ever conceived. And if it crashed back to earth, the landing site would become a barren wasteland for thousands of years.

Nuclear power is awesome, but radiation is a menace of nearly supernatural proportions.

I think the only way GreenPeace gets people to listen is by doing extreme irrational acts. Otherwise people won't listen unless one of the eco-terrorists sets some bullshit into motion.

They are part of the reason I had to a $2000 enviromental survey done to build a $3500 garage at my house. They had some fucking idiot come out and make sure I was not building a garage where some rare species of plants grow, not that I go ahead and park my oil-leaking car on top of this piece of dirt everyday anyways.

I just wish GreenPeace would concentrate on big MNCs doing most the damage and leave smaller issues alone.

Sadly, I beleive that the USSR is responsible for the vast majority of all nuclear material that has either slipped into belligerent hands or has been leaked into the environment. And the beaurocracy was sadly ignorant of radiation, and often blamed the crews involved when reactors malfunctioned. The nuclear submarine K-19 is a good example of this. Not only was the "widowmaker" built with a substandard nuclear reactor, but it's crew was issued chemical suits instead of radiation suits for protection. The chemical suits offered as much protection from radiation as a thick sweater and a surgical mask would have. Resultingly, everyone who entered the reactor chamber to service it died, and the rest of the crew has since died as well. Were it not for their dauntless efforts, the ship's reactor would have gone thermonuclear and created a significant nuclear detonation close to the borders of the united states, which at that time would have had a chance of triggering nuclear war.

I deeply want to visit both the Ukraine and Russia in my lifetime. Kiev is a wonderful city to behold. And I would like to brave the radiation in order to briefly gaze upon the Tchernobyl power plant in person. Also, tourism in Russia is rewarding and relatively inexpensive. A middle class tourist can afford to pay the russian military for a ride in an older MiG aircraft, which I would absolutely love.

It would also be a good reason to learn the russian language, which I find fascinating and rewarding.

I also must add that while I can tell that the author normally speaks ukranian russian, they are a very good author in english despite it.

Pris, this is a great read. I haven't been this eager to read since I read David K. Shipler's Russia: Broken Idols, Solemn Dreams. Thank you for the link! As I am reading this not only have I learned more about the tragedy than I ever knew, but I've actually had my eyes start to water once or twice in appreciation of, and empathy for, every one of the people that were affected by it.

I didn't think I was likely to find something on the internet, for free, which could be so educational and moving.
