Chernobyl Disaster

took place right about this time 20 years ago. The contamination spread across neighbouring Belarus, and into Europe. The sudden jump in radioactivity levels was enough to prompt a full-scale alert in Sweden, which initially believed the accident had happened at its own nuclear power station, on the Baltic coast. The evacuation of 600 workers had been ordered before experts realised that the source of the radioactivity must have been within the Soviet Union. In north Wales, sheep on some 350 farms still have to be tested for radiation before their meat can be eaten.

Good read of a motorcyclist's ride through Chernobyl. As far as I know, it's legit too.

The trauma of that incident killed many and mutated so so many children, they are still being born with birth defects to this day. I donate 100 dollars every year to the cause.

Not to be an asshole. I feel bad but are any of the mutations cool? Or are they all awful?
How long until that area is safe to live in?

No, it's not like teenage mutant ninja turtles. You can find some pictures of Chernobyl disaster consequences here.
Here's an interesting National Geographic material on Chernobyl.

Naw I feel bad for them and don't wanna look cause I like to look the other way.
I was wondering if people can live there in another 1000 years or if humanity has killed that area forever. Also they say animals and plants have now taken over the are (GO NATURE!) are they healthy?

who says plants and animals can handle high doses of radiation. It would cause mutation in the plants in animals just as much as in humans.

I do! i tested seeds to try and do mutations for fun. We zapped them with five times the lethal dose of radiation that humans can handle. What happened? All seeds grew without mutation.
Who else says?
"To begin our journey, we must learn a little something about radiation. It is really very simple, and the device we use for measuring radiation levels is called a geiger counter . If you flick it on in Kiev, it will measure about 12-16 microroentgen per hour. In a typical city of Russia and America, it will read 10-12 microroentgen per hour. In the center of many European cities are 20 microR per hour, the radioactivity of the stone. 1,000 microroentgens equal one milliroentgen and 1,000 milliroentgens equal 1 roentgen. So one roentgen is 100,000 times the average radiation of a typical city. A dose of 500 roentgens within 5 hours is fatal to humans. Interestingly, it takes about 2 1/2 times that dosage to kill a chicken and over 100 times that to kill a cockroach. This sort of radiation level can not be found in Chernobyl now. In the first days after explosion, some places around the reactor were emitting 3,000-30,000 roentgens per hour. The firemen who were sent to put out the reactor fire were fried on the spot by gamma radiation. The remains of the reactor were entombed within an enormous steel and concrete sarcophagus, so it is now relatively safe to travel to the area - as long as one do not step off of the roadway and do not stick in a wrong places.......
The map above shows all our journey through the dead zone. Radiation went in soil and now in apples and mushrooms. It is not retained by asphalt, which makes rides through this area possible. I have never had problems with the dosimeter guys, who man the checkpoints. They are experts, and if they find radiation on you vehicle, they gave it a chemical shower. I don't count those couple of times when "experts" tried to invent an excuse to give me a shower, because those had a lot more to do with physical biology than biological physics "
Does this prove the point?

I was thinking the same thing.
It's cool that animals and plants are living there. Also kinda cool that the radiation is protecting them.

i'm not saying that plants and animals are more effected by radiation that are humans, i'm saying that with enough radiation, plants and animals will die too. that article says the same thing. It may talk about how there is a resergence of animal populations due to lack of humans but it also says:
"Four square kilometres of pine forest in the immediate vicinity of the reactor went ginger brown and died, earning the name of the Red Forest.
Some animals in the worst-hit areas also died or stopped reproducing. Mice embryos simply dissolved, while horses left on an island 6km from the power plant died when their thyroid glands disintegrated."
its not a black and white issue. plants and animals may be more resitant than humans, but radiation is still detramental to them.

I wouldn't consider it a black and white issue either i was just pointing out that they prove to be more resilient.

yeah, i really liked it. Its quite funny but at the same time, its very emotional. I dont want to go into the plot too much but its about cultures crossing, the importance of the past to understand the present and future, what happens vs what could have happened, and much more. Very good film, you should def check it out.
Its better if your a russian speaker , that way you'll understand the more stubble humor and cultural nuances.

I notice that at least one person saw the "Ride through Chernobyl" site. That the one where the daughter of one of the scientists took pictures of the site and rides through there on her Kawasaki... Ahh, I found the link.
