PERLITE PROBS!!!!!???
    #515671 - 01/09/02 06:21 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

My perlite has been in the terrarium for almost a month. I occasionally put Hydrogen Peroxide in to reduce contams. I noticed today that there are some very small, brown spots on some of the perlite. Is this contamination? My cakes are not sitting directly on the perlite, but are sitting on plastic lids. Is there a strong chance my cakes could get contaminated? And will using more peroxide help?

Probably not,
I've seen those pink/brown spots form on perlite many times. I was told from someone that its just a natural reaction that the stone has with the water. Many stones like perlite that can absorb water will change color over a lengthy period of time.

Or some substrate from your cakes might have fallen into the perlite? Then you could have some problems.

Clean your perlite with a bleach/water mix.

Take your cakes out of the terrainum, put new perlite in.

Clean old perlite and save for later:)

also the perlite may absorb some color depending on your piping and if you have hard or soft water.
