Perlite Humidifacation ?

Will perlite be sufficient to acheive 100% Rh? And how do I go about doing this? Someone know? In a terrarium of course.

big blue 22 gallon tupperware bin that seals tight. toss 2" deep of perlite in the bottom of it, add some boiling water, add a splash of peroxide. mix around, try not to burn hands..... so the perlite is damp, but not soping wet. just that in the bottom will keep bin 98% humidity with out having to spray at all. just set you foil pans with holes in there and plop your casings into pans with 2" deep of wet sterile verm
most importantly, keep bin warm, 1/2 sunlight a day and also fan 4x a day

LOL ! Are you going to bake the shrooms ? Where did you get that boiling water idea ? Do this, mix cold water and H202, put it inside bin and then put the perlite, it could be the other way around but i don't like the big white cloud.

it just gets the terrarium up to temperature and builds condensation on teh walls to keep it humid in there, i dont put a pan with a cake in there until it has cooled almost all the way down

Is everyone sure that H2O2 keeps the perlite clean. It is at 3% already right, plus H2O2 loses its property in the presence of alot of things including air, doesn't it? So diluting it down to less than 1% and then letting it sit there to just become water over time.......... Is that really doing anything. I'm not sure. what about 1% bleach solution.

So, did you know that h2o2 breaks into water when heated ? Basically what you do is provide a bit of condensation at the beginning and loose the protection properties of h2o2.

What I'm saying is I don't think that h2o2 has any protective properties because of the reasons I talked about. I think it would work better with bleach. but then again when I used perlite and h2o2 I didn't haev any problems with contams in the perlite.. so maybe it does work.... I just can't figure out why it would

Good point cheesenoonions Light also breaks down h2o2, mabey keeping the light to a minimum will help. Also you could keep a spray bottle with a 50-50 mix of h2o2/h2o and srpay the perlite every couple of days.

I just thought of another good use for the H2O2 in the perlite. hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water in the presence of acids among other things in the following equation: H2O2 + 2H3O+ + 2e- ----> 4H20 When carbon dioxide dissolves in water it produces a small amount of carbonic acid H2CO3. Seems to be that maybe this acid would react with the H2O2. So effectively, the hydrogen peroxide acts as a chemical sink that would reduce the amount of CO2 in the bin.

Uhhh. I'm still having problems keeping humidity up in an 18 gal sterilite container. 1 1/2 inches of perlite with some small amount of water that wasnt absorbed by perlite. Any suggestions...or should this be working? My humidity gauge may be off. Its for reptiles and stuff. Thanks Everybody! And thanks Aeolus1369 for the in depth response about the peroxide.Any more help would be great.

farmerD your hygrometer is probably off. you should invest in a good one from radio shack or somewhere. Plus I think I read somewhere in this forum that you need to calibrate the reptile ones. Do a search for all dates in all forums. AFOM used perlite and has never had to add water and it's been almost six months. it's still at 97% I think if you are using cakes, and you followed the 2 in. perlite 1in. (or whatever the water level is suppose to be) water rule you'll be fine. Aeolus1369 that's a good point. What are the other products from the reaction you wrote above. Isn't one of them oxygen? I'm not sure, but if it was it would help to keep fresh O2 in the terrium for that reason also. What do you think?

The H2O2 did it's job on the perlite before it broke down, any possible spore of contam was probably killed by H2O2, but then if any spore of contam entered the terrarium after neutralizing the H2O2 you'll have more chances of having contaminated areas, so it's not like saying that if you don't use H2O2 you'll have contamination, no, but you'll have more chances of having it. Look, all that i'm saying is that H2O2 is not really needed if you have a sterile and sealed area, i find myself using H2O2 because i don't have a good sterile area to put my terrariums, using H2O2 reduces the chances of having contams and the more time it works the better.
