Insulation my boy! (Blanket your terrarium)
    #515460 - 01/09/02 01:40 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

I imagine that this isn't something new and spectacular, but I've noticed a lot of people have troubles with their temps and humidity, and the damn condensation... This is for the newbs like me.

I'm testing my incubator/growing chamber and have been a little worried about the swinging temps and excessive condensation forming on the walls and lid. I'm using a rectangular jug (foil lid) with a 100 watt aquarium heater for heat. (Some say to use 50 watt.)
This is how I solved most of my problems in one simple step:

I took a blanket, folded it in half and slung it over the tub. This obviously won't work for you if you're going to use an external light source, but I'm not. You might not need to use the blanket past the incubation stage anyhow... I don't really know.
As soon as I put the blanket on I noticed great results. Temp stabilized and I was able to turn the heat down. Humidity's within my control now (by manipulation of the foil lid.) The horribly excessive condensation dissapeared. The location of the tub is a little chilly, it's in my bedroom in the basement during a Canadian winter, and the heat is not very efficient in there. The condensation was just happening because of the temp difference I guess, becuase with the insulation it's cleared right up. It should be noted that my humidity was only in the mid 70's to mid 80's when I had all the condensation. (It was pouring out of the lid when I opened it, filling up in the bottom of the tub, beaded all over the walls... now it's gone.)

There you go. If you're not doing it already, it might help.

Everyone with their fancy shmancy setups!
I have a rubbermaid container, an inch of perlite in the bottom, tapering to a little less in one corner so I can see the waterline, and I just plunked my cakes in and away I go. Temperature ranges from 70-80 degrees, humidity seems alright, I'm laughing.

Whereabouts in Canada?

You should be laughing... ya lucky bastard. ; )
I had to go a heated route because like I said in the post, it get fairly cold in my room sometimes. The heater in the jug is pretty simple, and it takes care of the humidity problem... so I guess I'm laughing too. (We'll see how much I'm laughing when I put the thing to use...)

I'm in Alberta. It's actually surprisingly warm this year... it's been getting warmer the last few years. I've said it before somewhere around here, but it's been like plus 8 C lately, when it should be around -20 to -30 C... I still get a nasty chill in my room. I think it just cools off faster in there than the areas with the theromstat do, and it never really heats up to a fully comfortable warmth. I guess I could just open my door, but that wouldn't be suitable. (I have a need to keep it shut all the time. Not locked or anything, just shut. I know people go in there and it doesn't bother me too much, I just ask that they shut the door...)

Wow, 45 views... I wonder if any of those strangers are doing this, have been doing it, will start doing it... Basically I'm wondering what degree of originality is this idea. (I bet it's low, but I'm still curious.) It works so good, yet I've seen no mention of it.

Wow, that thumbs down was a little harsh. I've been on here off and on for quite awhile and I don't remember seeing it mentioned. I was just trying to share the idea to the newbs who might benefit from it...

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity I suppose. You could'a been gentler...

I grow in my basement in Ontario. I just set my terranium on top of my incubator (both are rubbermaids) it traps the escaping heat (which rises) and has brought its temp up to about 75. Works great.

No problem Cap, good luck!

Razer: I will most definately do that once (if) I've branched out a little further. At the moment I've only got the one chamber. I'm going to incubate in it, then grow.
Recycle that heat! Don't let it get away! hehe

i think the concept of covering yourself (or something) to keep it warm and insulation has probably been around for thousands of years, just my guess...

No kidding, here's the very first thing I said in the thread:

>I imagine that this isn't something new and spectacular, but I've noticed a lot of people have troubles with their temps and humidity, and the damn condensation... This is for the newbs like me.

You might also note that the main reason I decided to use it and the biggest benefit I've got from it is the annhialation of the condensation that was flooding my bin. I wanted to use the insulation to alleviate the problem of the condensation builing up in the lid and on the wall, and it worked like a damn charm, so I thought I'd share. And yes, it does keep it warmer, that much is obvious. I'm not asking for an award here, I was just letting people know who A) haven't thought of it yet. B) Were looking for a way to cut the condensation easily while maintaining proper humidity, even if their temps are fine (and so they might never think of insulating.)

I've been doing that more and more lately, putting my foot in my mouth. Ah well, live and learn I always say. hehe
