Terrarium insulation!
    #537448 - 02/01/02 12:51 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

OK.
Well my room is so damn cold, (No I dont have a heater), its about 55 degrees in here. I have my fish tank heater in my PLASTIC terrarium, with a "snap down" top. However there is a crack in between the lid and the box because of the heater's cord getting in the way.

Now, I have the friggin heater all the way up. The water temp inside the jug is at least 90 degrees, and its just keeping the terrarium to like 63 degrees. What should I do for some isulation? Any one know some good methods to doing this?! Its pretty important!

Thanks...

whats the wattage on the heater? maybe a bigger one would work better? If you just bought it today you shouldn't have a problem returning it. What method of humidification are you using?

Blankets are so nice and WARM Oooo...
But what about the light source?! hmm.. Ive had light on them for probably 10 hours over the past few days...No pins yet, but they've been in a long cold shock heh.
Is that enough light for now? I dont need any light huh . i always think that the more light the more nice they'll be hehe.

Its a 100 watt heater, i mean, i really pumps out the heat. Using perlite for humidity. I figured that that is actually really cold. I wonder how to get the temp of the perlite up!! Also, using a fish tank pump ... PUMPING IN COLD AIR from the outside.. doh...Can you put the pump inside...or wait that wouldnt do anything?

Well you need light
Perhaps just wrap the sides of the terrarium with a blanket that will insulate a little.

I mean, at night though, when it really gets cold I can just keep the blanket on and around it, then in the day i can just wrap the blanket around...

Its the top of the thing thats really loosing heat i think. Maybe I should get some weather stripping for the leaks ??? But still the top of the plastic container really looses heat just like a window would.

Try to crank up your heater some more by removing the knob....

or.. maybe if you could get a heating pad and put it under the terrarium that would keep the perlite warm..but maybe too warm I dont know
maybe with cold air pumping in it would balance each other out?

you could try a bigger heater, might work. If you don't wanna dish out the cash get last years models or one that isn't fully submersible. i don't know how big ur tank is or how handy u are, but if you had a fully submersable heater, and put enough water/perlite to where you could fully sumberge your heater that would heat the thing up for sure. I believe you would have to construct something to keep the perlite from touching the heater cause it could blow.

Yeah yeah...blanket on at night and around during day that works
If they just invented clear blankets people wouldn't have these problems

Well, noone has told you to do this yet at all, but what you should do, is cut a notch in the edge of your bin, just enough to run the cord through. just cut down far enough for the thickness of the cord.
then take some calking, and smooth it over, and seal it around the cord.
You may not think you're losing much heat from that being open, but you definatly are.

I have an enclosed plastic terrarium that no light can get in. I use a low watt plant light bulb on a timer for light and some heat. I have it on about 15-30 minutes every two hours depending on how cold it is out. I also use a large heating pad under my terrarium on low to medium setting also depending on current room temperature. This is on all of the time. When I want to intiate pinnning, I stop the light and turn off the heating pad for 24-48 hours which will easily drop the temperature by 10-15 degrees. Just in case your wondering I normally maintain a 85F on average w/ the above scenerio. I'm sure your results will be different since my room temperature is about 67F you may have to have the heating pad on high I would try not to mess with the light as much. The heating pad under your terrium right below your perlite will aslo help in the humidity since this will be heating up the water and perlite first.

Or you could use actual styrofoam insulation. Celtek or something. About $6 for a 4'x8' sheet, or just pick up some scraps from a construction site. Just cut it into sheets the size of the sides of your bin, then tape/glue on. You could cut another piece for the top that you only put over it in the evening. Remember to put the insulating lid on the top b4 it gets cold, or the insulation doesn't help as much.

Another part of your problem may be the perlite. Perlite humidifies via evaporation. Whenever you have evaporation, you loose heat. Perhaps an ultrasonic would help here, but I really don't know exactly how big a difference that would make in degrees.

thanks for the posts guys!

Hey cookiewhore...would I have to cut the cord and then twine the wires back with some electrical tape or something? The plug for the outlet is pretty big, and it just connects right to the heater.

Yeah I might try some styrofoam. I cant spend ANY more money however on this setup, because I am broke as friggin hell :frown:

I agree with mycofile, get a sheet of styrofoam at home depot or lowes and fit it to the container. It looks like the stuff in the pictures above.

well as you know i'm a newbie to. but at The Hawks Eye he has instructions on how to make "the hawk tank" and he drills into the terranium, inserts the cables, and then seals the holes with the cords in place. it should be easy if your using a plastic container. you wouldnt have to leave a crack in the top, and it might help a little.

yeah, a question about aquarium heaters, idealy, should the water tempurature be exactly the same temp as you want the terrarium; or should it be slightly higher? If so, what temp should the heater be set to? I currently have an aquarium heater in my terrarium and the water is at approx 31 degrees celcius, should it be higher?

thanks!

I disagree...I find that the best insulation is good ol' green backs! Expensive but well worth it.

I have a similar experience with my temperature. If you are interested, you can check out my thread at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9869262
I also specified how much is the temperature loss between layers of polystyrene, should you be interested in that material.
