Questions on Coolmist construction
    #5136353 -

I've searched for everything relating to using coolmist and ultrasonic humidfiers. I'm going to be hooking both of these machines to my martha stewart closet and it'd be nice to see more pictures of setups. My coolmist looks like this http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002TPEF0.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS260_.jpg
and im not sure where to drill the holes, as well as on the ultrasonic. (which I can't find at any stores currently)

If anyone has any tips or information on this whole prodcedure i'd appreciate it because i'm not 100% clear on everything.

Do you think 4 of THESE (which are 39 1/2" L x 20 1/4" W x 7" H) would work well with this greenhouse? I think thats the shelving unitthat HC uses. Would be pretty sweet.

is the reason we can't run any of these things inside the terraium because they will choke on the high humidity?

I run two coolmist humidifiers inside my greenhouse. The one nuk1m linked to above is the wrong type though. You want the coolmist with a spinning impeller, not a filter pad.

Put one coolmist near the top and the second one on a center shelf. Either get a humidistat or set them up to run for three to five minutes every half hour or so.

Don't drill holes in the coolmist. Most come with a two year warranty, but you can't return them if they've been modified.

^ roger rabits post further continues my confusion on this, you put your coolmist directly in your fruiting chamber??

you put both inside?
what about FAE?

anyone ever rigged a coolmist top to fit on a much larger container so that it can hold a lot more water?  you could glue one into a shallow tub, like the one earier in this post
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000CF...VMEY02&n=284507
then you only have to refill once a week.

Air exchange is provided by the very loose fitting door. My greenhouse is framed with PVC pipe and covered with plastic sheeting. I got all the parts at the hardware store for less than $35. I'd say it's twice to three times the size of the Martha closet. I didn't put zippers or anything else to seal the door, so it's open on both sides from floor to ceiling. This provides for plenty of air exchange, and the cool mist humidifiers have no problem keeping the humidity right around 85% to 90%, which is perfect for cased substrates. When I use it for cakes or straw logs, etc., that require higher humidities, I simply cover them with wax paper which holds in the humidity in that specific area while still fitting loose enough to allow gas/air exchange.

i like your wax paper trick, ive been using it on my last few trays.

so do you think that one coolmist inside of a normal-sized martha would give ample humidity and FAE, assuming there are holes in the bottom and a loose zipper up top?

RR,
Could you explain more precicely how you fasion the wax paper? Do you tuck two edges of the paper underneath the cakes so it is a tube of sorts?
Thanks

its a tek for casings. you simply lay a piece of wax paper over the tray, and it keeps up the humidity around the casing layer and still allows gas/air exchange.

Yes, in a normal sized Martha, one impeller type cool mist will keep the humidity high enough.

Wax paper works great to put over cased substrates from the time you first expose to fruiting conditions. It will keep the humidity near 100% right on the surface where primordia form, then as the pins grow, they will push the wax paper out of the way, opening the edges to allow for less humidity. It's sort of a self-regulating system. Just be sure to change the wax paper out for a clean sheet every second day. Also, you must use this tek right from the start. If your casing has already been open and exposed, placing wax paper over it will help the contaminant spores to germinate and grow. If used from the start, most contaminant spores falling from gravity will land on the wax paper, which you carefully remove and replace every 48 hours.

Just lay the wax paper over the top. Don't try to tuck it under the cake or other substrate or you'll do more damage than good. You can fold it if necessary to fit, but don't try to make a tight seal.

RR . How do the holes stop you from returning it ? The holes are in the resevoir , this doesn't usually go bad . The motor does . I bought a coolmist almost 2 years ago . Drilled it like this

and have returned it 4 times with no problems . When it dies , I buy another one , bring it home , swap the motors and return the bad motor for a full refund . Haven't had to pay to replace it yet and don't have to re hook up another one every time it goes bad . Just swap motors , lol .

Hey, that's a good idea. I always felt like I had to take the old one back when I made the exchange.

I'll tell ya what though, when I was drilling the humidifiers and running tubing, I was going through motors just like you are. Sometimes it would be the bearings that would go out, making it noisy, then the motor would burn out next from the extra load. I figured the backpressure was forcing mist up into the motor. Since I moved the humidifiers inside the greenhouse itself and use them just like they come out of the box, I've been on the same ones for over a year now, a record.
