it was a massacre...
    #5120659 -

So me, my friends Nikki* and Amber* are walking down to Jack In The Box because we're stoned out of our minds... and my friend Nikki has to stop and take a breather. (She has very large boobies.) So anyway, we all stop so she can catch her breath and we all look down and see this.

It was a freaking massacre. I think some kids came by and kicked the growth around a bit. Frankly I was going to do the same thing until my friend Amber commented that these guys looked like a batch we had tripped on about two weeks earlier.

Upon closer inspection I did find that these were sorta similar looking, but I seriously doubt they are of trippy origin. The ones we had were called golden caps or something... very sweet tasting. Almost nutty, like a pistachio. Fucking trip and a half, Amber and Nikki told me I went autistic after sitting on the couch for half an hour... very intense. We were told our trip would last for about 8 hours, we had our trip in 2. But I digress-

So anyway my friends and I would like to know what these guys are.

These guys were growing on the left side of the tree in the above picture. The widest part (from a top view) measured 17 inches, and from the base of the growth to the highest cap was about a foot. Some of those guys were long. I'm sorry the picture doesn't show the sizes very well.

I thought these guys were cool, they were only about 2 and a half inches tall.

And this was kind of by itself, kicked or whatever to the right side of the very first picture above, but out of that photo's range.

Kind of gives you a nice view.

Now I'm going to be a complete noob and follow all of the posting guidelines, even if this is nothing.

*We found these guys in a corner of an apartment complex. The area was pretty well shaded and the temp out here in So-Cal has been fairly warm, but pretty cold of late. Absolutely no rain whatsoever has fallen in like 3 months...we're a little below sea-level where I live, it's actually a valley. At first I thought these were growing around the tree, but on closer inspection I found that they were (and still are)growing on the tree itself, no mushroom was growing in the soil. They smelled too, a little like moist dung but more like feet. If that makes sense. Like wet smelly feet. I don't know how to describe it. Funny thing is these were growing in an apartment complex that has the most...users of recreational drugs in the area. I have no clue if this has anything to do with anything. Never mind actually.

*I actually didn't check the gills, but in the pictures of the smaller mush you can sort of make out what it looks like under there. I wouldn't know how to describe it.

*The stems were pretty nondescript, but they sort of looked like they were striped or molted. Again, the smaller mushies show this better than the larger groupings. I made Nikki squeeze a stem to see if it gave or whatnot, and she said it was dense and at the same time it wasn't. Whatever the hell that means. Actually, looking back- none of these were broken. A lot were strewn about but not one stem had been broken.

*The caps weren't anything to write home about either, but they were a pretty awesome color. Some ranged from muted amber to a really neat red (note the smallish clumps of red in the center of the massacre picture)- and some had both colors. There were a few caps that had a darker reddish spot on the very top of the cap. The larger caps were about 5 inches wide and about 3 inches tall from base of the cap to the top. I'm sorry about the pictures- it's been overcast as hell and the colors aren't as cool as in person. They were a little tacky but not slimy.

*As for bruising, I'm not quite sure what I was supposed to be looking for, but a few mushies were kind of turning a pretty hue of blue. I think you can sort of see this in the last picture, in the top left section. Quite a few of them had the blue-ness around the areas where they were bent. No clue what that means, but alright.

I'm really sorry for the quality of these pics, I was using my cell phone and I was super high. Thanks for any info you can give me, if I'm right and these are nothing (other than purty) I get to see Nikki's boobs. Hooray!

*names changed to protect the large-breasted.

Hi butwhoscounting,

Welcome to the Shroomery. I can tell you put a lot of work into this post, and your photos aren't bad considering they came from a cell phone. However, there still isn't enough info to make an ID. Without knowing the color of the spores, or at least seeing the gills, all I can do is guess.

That being said, my first thought when I saw your photos was Brick Tops (Hypholoma sublateritium).

They are not active, but are reported to be edible; I have not tried them.

Anybody who wants to try Brick Tops should be very careful not to confuse them with Sulfur Tufts (Hypholoma fasciculare), which are likely poisonous.

They do seem to be growing like you would expect the typical hypholoma to be.. I would support that as a reasonable guess. On the subject of brick tops, I find what I believe to be brick tops each year.. I'm sure that they are hypholomas at least. The caps often do dry to a lighter color and often become a similar shape to those in your pics (the last one appears to be something else).
One thing that I find interesting about this species is that the gill color can often vary in darkness. The prime healthy specimen will have dark blackish to purple brown looking gills, but sometimes they will almost look whitish during certain stages, usually a sign that they are immature.
Anyways, here are some "brick tops" from my back yard.
