is this Hypholoma canoides ?
    #3148646 - 09/17/04 04:27 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

went into the woods a bit up in the mountains today and found a bunch of mushrooms beside the path.

They were growing on someting that looked like a very old broken down stump overgrown with green moss.
Since the stump was old and covered with the moss I cannot tell for sure what kind of tree it was but here almost only firs are growing.
When I looked at the gills of the mushrooms I saw that they had a smokey color:

The smell of the mushroom was not really worth mentioning,
and the color of the flesh is pale brown to yellow:

The inside of the stem is hollow like on this picture:

Hope you can see the sizes of the various parts of the mushroom from that picture:

I am just taking some spore prints and will post them when they are ready.
So, what do you think - is it Hypholoma capnoides ?

They look right, and your habitat description is right. Be sure to verify the spore print color.

Happy mushrooming!

thanks
I just had a look at the prints and it seems that the color of the spore print is a dark brown.

Hmmm. It should come out purplish brown.

Another good test is that a tiny piece of it should not taste bitter (don't swallow the piece you test).

Did any of the young ones have an unbroken partial veil?

Happy mushrooming!

I will examine the prints again tomorrow during the day and post a scan.
Now the light is not really good for judging the color of the prints.

No, it tastes very mild and not bitter at all.

> Did any of the young ones have an unbroken partial veil?
No, could not see any sign of a veil at all.

What else could it be - Gallerina ?

Galerinas will have a brown to rusty brown spore print.

Hypholomas will have a purplish brown spore print. The bitterness test will help make sure you aren't getting one of the poisonous Hypholomas. That genus is not the best for edibles. Even though there are some edible species, they are not among the very best species for eating.

Happy mushrooming!

Here is the pic of the spore print taken with a scanner.
Hope the colors are a bit better now:

That's a bit less purple than I normally see. Perhaps they are Pholiotas.

Happy mushrooming!
