Salvia Seeds?
    #5100407 -

Why is it so hard to find salvia seeds? I was guessing because its hard to grow but I wasnt sure. If anyone knows where I could get some please let me know. Thanks

Salvia very rarely makes seeds, and those that it does are most often infertile anyway. Instead it's propagated almost exclusively by cuttings, which are available from various sources.

Virtually all of the commercially available salvia is from one of two original plants - obtained from native users - which have been cloned endlessly through cuttings.

If you're interested, Daniel Siebert has a page that talks a lot about such things here

I purchased a few salvia plants from Theatrum Bontanicum at www.greenstranger.com. They were pre-rooted in small pots and very healthy large cuttings.

Salvia in the wild, propegates through broken branches falling to the ground and rooting. Its an amazing plant. It means that all the salvia you find in a location, are actually the same plant. I really wish to find some salvia seeds some day, get my own salvia strain.

Not all of the plants in circulation are cloned from one or two plants. Daniel Seibert ( www.sagewisdom.org ) and other people have gotten Salvia to seed and there are different strains with different characteristics. You can buy these different strains on some websites.

I have just recently found some Salvia seeds growing on a plant near by and have a few planted. Hopefully they sprout!

Spread the knowlage and Love!

Peace

to my knowledge..

well..

to my guessing...

getting seeds from a Salvia Divinorum; would be like trying to get a baby from lesbians...

and just to add to that.. this is he important bit, so I will not just edit.. :P

there are no male Divinorum.. but there are other male Saliva's.. thus one can mix and get it to seed, but the mix would not be a "pure" Divinorum..

mind you, this is pure speculation..

I think salvia is monoecious and not dioecious....

I read the other day that salvia seeds have a germination rate of something near 30%, I assumed it was simply too high and disregarded it.

In my experience, which is very limited, the germination rate is round 40%. I planted 7 seeds and three sprouted. So 30% isn't really too high.

Peace
