I'm still stumped. Are fractals something like holograms?

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

If you see how the word SPIRAL is similar to the word FRACTAL...and look at spirals..and look at fractals...then you might see what I mean...

I wish people would actually de-emphesize the spiral-aspects of fractals.. Most of the coolest fractals I've seen had a minimal amount of spirality to them  heh

The possibilities are endless! Lay off the spirals, fractal peeps:

it's not the beautiful piccy that matters, life is chaos,
it's non-lineair.
when u see the whole picture u'll notice that what we learn at school is the irregular shit

(dno if this makes sense i'm not too good in english)

Think of a fern as an easy example, if you look at one individual leaf on a fern it looks exactly like the fern, although smaller. That fern may have scaled-down ferns of its own on them, or it may continue down into the cellular structure.

Or how a tree branch splits into smaller tree branches, the properties of the branches aside from size are the same on all levels.

A human body, is the fractalis[at]ion, of one cell...

get it?

this is the best of the lot...

http://www.jracademy.com/~jtucek/math/uses.html

my take is that the formulas are written so that after the
first several trillion iterations you can predict the godzillions.
at that point you can stabilize the frequency based on the formula

There is some complex mathmatical equation to them, I never quite understood. An interesting fact though, lightning strike victims usually have complex fractal patterns appear on their skin for several hours.

My math professor for my class last year has done a lot of work with fractals ("Mandelbrot" sets, if you've heard of them are supposed to be named after him, but Mandelbrot stole it... he retaliated by naming those black figures seen in a lot of fractals "Mandelbugs".. Mandelbrot did not appreciate it). Anyway, he did a couple lectures on fractals, I can try to explain some of the math.

Each fractal actually corresponds to the roots of a mathematical equation. Newton's Method of Exhaustion is a technique used to find roots of complex equations that we could never figure out by hand. To sum it up, you guess an answer, plug it into a certain equation, you get another answer. Plug that into the same equation, you get another... etc. Eventually, your answers will get closer and closer to each other until you know you have a root to the equation.

[edit, screwed up this part a little, fixed it]

If you start out with a point in the black, it eventually converges to a root (hence it is in the 'Mandelbrot set'). If you start out in a point in the colors, it will explode into some random number that is not a root. The color actually correponds to how many iterations it takes to explode to a certain point.

And regarding the fractal-hologram question... They are not one in the same. But you could say that a hologram is a fractal.

If you have a cube that is storing the 3d image of something (ie a banana) and you cut it into 4ths... each smaller cube will have the entire image of the banana, just smaller. Likewise, if you cut those into a million pieces, you will have a million tiny images of a banana. So you could say that a hologram is a fractal, because no matter how far you zoom in on it, it has the entire image, just smaller.

a fractal and a hologram differ ? a hologram has 2 dimensions...
a fractal doesn't exist without 2.

that brings us to the point...

the 3rd dimension doesn't exist

without the 4th.

RGB..

all you see on this screen.. is combinations of those three colors..

go look closely at you TV screen...

..

what does that tell you about nature/fractals? ...

light, sound, colour.. (now where did I read about that.. :p "first there was nothing, then.. ya da yaadaa..)

so your point being...

we can disregard the 3rd

no depth.

its just a tv screen

just a juxtaposition.

that means we are moving faster than light
because how else can we reflect upon the
existence we so crave after?
