Why does God like to be worshipped?
    #5003653 -

Well? Why would an all powerful, all knowing, all loving being need his ego massaged by his fallible creations?

For only one reason that I can think of. The fact that man is speaking for God. In other words man has made God in their own image. Yeah, I know, pretty silly!

Actually, that's not silly at all. As a matter of fact, it's the best answer yet.

God does not need to be worshipped. worshipping God is for your benefit, not God's benefit. worship is simply one way of taking the focus off your ego and bringing it closer to your true self. it's a very humbling experience.

I don't see how worshiping anyone is of benefit to me or anyone. It's a distraction from taking responsibility for being a creator and working on the self. (not the ego).

That is the exoteric interpretation of God. The estoeric one is the exact opposite: God created the world so that He may worship it.

And btw, "worship" and "love" are synonymous in mysticism.

I don't think any one of us is in a position to say what God needs, but God obviously wants to be worshiped as he so commands his believers in various religions.

Yes, if we don't worship, God will get pissed at us (according to some religions).

God commands you to worship him and you do it so as to keep in God's good graces. Seems like many believers are concerned with looking out for numero uno.

I am obviously referring to the words of various religions that tell people God wants to be worshiped. Why shouldn't we take these words at face value, why should we take them to mean almost the exact opposite?

Which version of mysticism? Your personal interpretations are quite a stretch, bringing them at odds to the written words (and common usage) that many profess and believe.

try it and see. right now focus your attention away from your desires and turn your mind to God. put your hands together in the formal praying position if you wish to. if you dont feel any clearing of your mind you're either doing it wrong or worship is not for you. however, that doesn't mean it is not of benefit to others. and how is it a distraction? its supposed to free you from distractions. is meditation a distraction?

edit: btw worship is really for people who are not very far on the spiriual path and feel the need for security, once youve moved beyond that stage it may no longer be of use to you.

I don't think any one of us is in a position to say what God needs,

youre entitled to that opinion but i am still going to say what i think God needs. and aren't you doing the same thing by saying he needs to be worshipped?

but God obviously wants to be worshiped as he so commands his believers in various religions.

that doesn't mean he wants to be worshipped, it simply means he wants people to worship him (perhaps for their benefit and not his).

Yes, if we don't worship, God will get pissed at us (according to some religions).

so are you asking about the teachings of a specific religion or God in general? since many religions conflict in some places they can't all be absolute truth. therefore i don't think you can assume something is true simply because some religions say it. thus my view that worship is for our benefit and not God's benefit is still plausible.

So you presume to know what God needs? Wow, are you Jesus Christ or something? How can you know the needs of God?

What?!? Excuse me, but if someone wants people to worship him, he wants to be worshiped... it's the same thing.

Other than making sure God doesn't get pissed or that the worshiper kisses God's ass to in order go to heaven, or peace of mind in someone thinking that he is avoiding pissing off God or greasing the skids into heaven, no one has made a case for any benefit to worshiping a deity.

why can't i have an opinion on the needs of God? going by my current understanding of what God is, he has absolutely no need to be worshipped.

Where did I say that God needs to be worshiped?

the statement " Why would an all powerful, all knowing, all loving being need his ego massaged by his fallible creations" sort of implied it.

What?!? Excuse me, but if someone wants people to worship him, he wants to be worshiped... it's the same thing.

well wanting isn't the same as needing.

But you claim to know what God needs...

you asked a question, i gave my opinion on the answer. if you don't think people can know what God needs then what is the point of this thread? how can we answer your question?

worshipping a god can provide people with a sense of security.

but anyway i don't consider this a particularly important issue, its not worth having a long debate over. interpretations of god vary.

Well the original query was, "Why does God like to be worshiped?" I do not see how an omnipotent being should have any real needs, for he has the power over everything. Rather, he could have desires and so the question comes up, why desire to be worshiped?

Quote:

the statement " Why would an all powerful, all knowing, all loving being need his ego massaged by his fallible creations" sort of implied it.

No, it does not imply that I believe or have stated that God needs to be worshiped. It is a QUESTION, seeking justification for why God wants worship.

Quote:
What?!? Excuse me, but if someone wants people to worship him, he wants to be worshiped... it's the same thing.

well wanting isn't the same as needing.

I was not addressing 'need' in this response but was addressing your statement, "that doesn't mean he wants to be worshipped, it simply means he wants people to worship him" which seems rather confusing. Your statement was along the lines of "x=y does not mean the same as as y=x."

Quote:
if you don't think people can know what God needs then what is the point of this thread?

I was trying to get a cogent response which would explain the peculiarity of an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being having a desire for his lowly creations to worship him. Does God have a weak ego prompting a desire in him for worship?

Quote:
worshipping a god can provide people with a sense of security.

A 'sense' of security, now there's the rub for the worshipers and I agree. However, this gives no rational for God wanting to be worshiped.

It's a distraction IMO because you look for "God" outside yourself, and don't realize you are "God" manifest along with everything else. I frankly don't believe the word God is meaningful. Maybe the problem here is just a language thingy.

You are correct Icelander. If God is omnipresent, he is in fact within everyone and everything.
