Used Socks?

My incubator smells a bit like used socks, it's not really strong, but noticeable. My substrate is almost done incubating, and I can only find white mycelium. Should I be concerned?

Well, mycelium does slightly smell "mushroomy"... I don't know what your socks smell like though, so that description could mean a lot of different things... like if you have athletes foot = FUNK CITY, or if you have diaphoretic feets = soggy smell, or if you use odor eaters = um, dunno, Dr. Schol-ie smell? whatever...LOL.

Maybe if you send me one of your unlaundered socks for my infamous Smell Test... then I could help. :laugh:

pressure cooking grains aren't all that pleasant smelling either, but i'm used to it by now...probably pressure cooked many many gallons of grains

Toe fungus doesn't normally smell.

Foot odor comes from bacterial waste products (what the bacteria poo out) after they feast on the sweat from your feet.

If your jars smell like feet, you have a bacterial infection in one or more jars. Check them for a sludgy appearance.

Someone else in the growlogs forum just had a problem with this. Their trays ended up fruiting fine. One of my casings smelt a little funky for a while once but the smell cleared up after a week or two.

2 of the jars ended up being contaminated, who knows if they were causing the smell.  I got dark black spots all over both cakes :frown:

if you use tyvek as a filter, i just waft each jar in front of my face... if you smell any kind of odor. it's usually a contam,
ie.) wetspot, slime, the mean green is a noticible thing, you can see in a jar, but it doesn't smell bad.

wetspot sucks, but you can cut it out with sucess of still growing fruits.

slime just get's thrown out.... it's a big goopy mess, and makes the kernels (wbs/rye) soft and squishy.
