Those who have dread locks.....

How did you do it? Did you use the back comb method? The dread wax? Or the Just not comb your hair method?

Which one turns out having the best nice and tight dreads?

I met someone with dreds before... they used toothpaste and dred wax. but their hair smelled awful from not washing it.

Dread wax isn't very good.Any kind of wax can stay in your hair and eventualy turn moldy.Half of my head is locked up,I used the backcombing method.You need to get some residue free shampoo to wash your hair with.Or maybe somthing with tea tree in it also.

had two friends do backcombing with a bit of soap and wax. then used fjord water (quite salty) mixed with a bit of lemon juice - sprayed that on my head for the first month or so, palm rolled them a lot, and that's about it.

had them for a year and a half now...

who doesn't wash their hair? that's pretty disgusting... i wash my dreads every other week or so, with dr bronners soap. it usually smells pretty nice.

some chik at this tatoo place in canada, but she looked like she didnt wash herself

it looks wierd the first couple months... my friend had em and he looked so wierd till he had them for awhile then they started looking normal..

I hate hairstyles that look ugly for a while until you can fully grow them or get them formed.

You wind up feeling like an ass and if you dont like the resulting hairstyle it was all in vain.

ive got a dread mullet... but ive had a fullhead a few times.

rubbing my head in a clockwise motion, tearing, and travelling forms the nicest dreads ive seen but it takes a couple years till the ends tighten up and it looks differentiated and not a giant mat.

I did the backcomb/wax thing when i was a kid, and strongly disagree with it. you can tell... its aesthetic vs. *true*... uncomfortable and heavy maintence.

leave it alone and give it some time!

actually a lot more so now that i've moved back to the US than when i was living in Denmark. i work for a friend, so they don't really have an affect on my professional life. what will be interesting is to see how my grandparents will react when i see them in february- the only people they have ever seen with dreadlocks are sadhus :smile:

I went natural(not combing your hair) i think they make the best dreads for most people. I say most people becuase mine ended up combining and i cut them.they where FAT though i really wish they wouldnt have combined but i have some velcro hair so it might work out for you.

i've been on a mad search for someone to start my hair into dreads for ever. No takers. everyone says I should leave my hair how it is but I'm tired of it, I don't want to cut it but I want something diferent. I tried just leaving it, without combing it and hoppeing the saltwater and sand would help them start, never took. I don't know what I'm doing and I'm affraid I would fuck them up If I tried starting them myself by back combing and wax. Tis frustrateing.

sand??? lol do your self a favor and go to that site i posted. salt water dry's your hair out too much you dont have to do that to get dreads.

well I was'nt Intentionally putting sand in my hair, but I was sleeping on the beach at the time, so yeah, plenty of sand found its way in there. I could have sworn They would have locked up but they never took.

btw, I'm already at the site, diggin and envying all the sick locks. There is a wealth of info for dreadheads there. Thanks for the link.

salt-water does dry out your scalp and hair a lot, but i found that spraying my newly made dreads with a mixture of ocean-water and lemon-juice really helped accelerate the initial locking procedure

do you still have dreads, mindcandy?

I didnt comb my hair for two years. I ripped em apart if they were to big. I didnt like how the big ones would pull on my scalp. That and DONT ITCH!!!!!!! Itching leads to problems. That and using certain oils and essentials that sooth and deter pests.

I sawm in the ocean that had red tide. Bits of red algae every where. It took a lot of work to get my head and dreads not smelling like shrimp.

im trying to grow my hair out.  Im starting to hit that stage..and I only see it getting worse.  Problem is i work at a place where you cant wear hats.  :frown:
