Dread locks...

So, i decided that I'm definatly going to get dreads, but im looking for some advice, and of everywhere on the internet I go, I figure the shroomery would have the most people with dreads, haha.
So, for those who have / have had dreads, what technique did you use? How did it go? any products to reccomend? So far all i have really found was the dreadhead stuff, which people really seem to like. I've seen a few other sites highly reccomend their stuff as well.
My hair is about a half inch below my chin right now. I would like to let it grow a bit more first, but I want them to start to tighten up before the summer really starts.
So, yeah, thats basically it. I searched first, but only found one topic that didnt really answer my questions much.

I used backcombing and wax at first. The wax sucked. It's just messy, and it didn't really do what it was supposed to do, it just washed out pretty quickly. I recommend you just backcomb and then use rubberbands on both ends and leave em there for a couple months. Don't use any of those overpriced products from the websites. Wash with something residue free--I recommend Dr. Bronner's soap, which you can find in any health food store. And of course don't use conditioners.

first, make sure your hair is as long as possible before making them. they'll shrink BIG-TIME, esp if your dreads are fat.
i made mine (or, two friends did) by grabbing clumps of hair and backcombing a lot. they worked in some herbal bay-rum soap every now and again, just a little to increase the tackiness of the hair. after two nights of this, my whole head was "dreaded" but each dread was poofy as all hell and not tight at all. i spent the next 3 or so months palmrolling them all the time, and a lot of time dipping my head in the ocean and letting it dry in the air (the salt helped them lock up). a mixture of lemon juice and water can be sprayed on the scalp to ease itchiness (that is fucking intense for the first few months).
now i don't do much to my hair - if i find some loose hairs, i'll make them into a little dreadball and work it into the base of another dread. and when i'm drunk i palmroll them out of habit.

one might argue that the original dread-heads were Samson & hindu ascetics, neither of whom were "hippies"

haha, as far as i know there is nothing living in my hair.
one of the thin dreads in the back lost its tip a while back, i cut the tip in half after it fell off to take a look, and there was no mold or anything funky - just looked like a big rope of hair

How to lock up dreads in 1 hour:
Get on eBay. Buy a cheapo set of crochet hooks (tiny gauge). Alternatively, ask your grandma for some.
Take a clump of hair, and jab the hook through the hair. Move the hook all around the clump of hair, jabbing in different places. You'll have the tightest dreads of whatever thickness you want.

You offered an opinion that's racist and that you knew wouldn't be appreciated by anyone who's posting in this thread. You intentionally provoked hostile responses--that's called "trolling," by the way--and now that you got one, you're getting bent out of shape about it. Saying "no offense" before saying something that you know is offensive is a pretty hypocritical thing to do.
I also find it funny that I'm being told to shut my fucking mouth by someone who apparently believes that simply having any opinion at all is just cause for making a post. You see it's my opinion that you're a dumbass troll, and that's about as valuable and post-worthy as your opinion that there's something wrong with white guys having dreads.

i also don't like huge pink mohawks, mullets and rattails
it's not racism, i just don't like the way it looks
and you're the one who started to be offensive by calling me a dumbass, before that all was dandy when subjected to offensive language, i retaliate in like form
