Contamination?
    #496122 - 12/19/01 04:37 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

Is there any distinguishing features of a contaminated colony in the jars? Say the jars were contaminated, if one was to stick these cakes in a terrarium would mushrooms grow? If the mushrooms did grow would they most likely be a harmful strain?

thanks for your help
peace

The assertion that contamination could be absorbed into the mycellium although it is a safe way of thinking has been found to be false with my experimentation. That is definitely with trichoderma (green) and cobweb mold. Both molds when they actually get to the mushroom will rot it, making it very clear that the mushroom has been 'poisoned' if you like.

Now, thats not to say that this is advice telling you to go right ahead because far be it for me to be responsible for somebody getting sick but this seems to be the truth for atleast green and cobweb mold - the most common cake/casing infections.

It is tough to fruit a contaminated cake/casing anyway. You can give it a try but anything but a bit of green (cut it out) and cobweb (spray with a h202 solution) is probably not worth fighting. If the cakes are contaminated before full colonisation forget it, its not going to happen.

Mycellium from one strain of cubensis will not have anything to do with even mycellium from another strain of cubensis.
