They way I generally do (and have done it) is to do cyclic heatings. Because I'm using tupperware the substrate can easily burn the plastic once it reaches a high enough temperature. So generally I just burst heat them around 3-4 times getting them as hot as they can be (and most of the time making the damn lids pop off despite the fact holes are present), let them cool and then put them back in.

This method works pretty okay. You can even combine say microwave with a further 30 mins boiling. Nothing grew in those jars for like 4 weeks (I think my spores were exposed to too much heat during the 2 years I've had them).

I have been interested in writing a Microwave Tek though. When I've done more experimentation I'll write one. But for the moment I think multiple short strong bursts if you are using tupperware is the best way to go.

If you are using glass jars, the sky is the limit. Although I'm sure you could probably burn substrate in the microwave so be careful. Also, allow for moisture loss in the microwave because it certainly does happen. The vermiculite layers tend to get wet using this method but it doesn't seem to matter than much, just generally means the mycellium will take over that layer aswell.. which is kind of cool looking.
