The USSR proved that government can not exist without it's people or without a stable society behind it. The Soviet Union was a shell of a nation during pretty much it's entire life.

yeah, but my point is that anything mankind builds can (and always has BTW) come down, and the bigger it is, the harder it falls, not the more stable it is.

From the Yahoo (the other doesn't work):

"Cheney told his audience the United States doesn't engage in torture, these participants added, even though he said the administration needed an exemption from any legislation banning "cruel, inhuman or degrading" treatment in case the president decided one was necessary to prevent a terrorist attack."

"Cruel, inhuman or degrading" does not, in my view and that of many others, necessarily constitute torture. They are not synonymous in the eyes of the law. We await your proper attempt to answer the link request.

If we were talking about pow's "cruel and degrading" would be against international law. Since we are talking about illegal combatants, we are in gray area, and the law is somewhat liquid.

That constitutes torture to me. Those are the links. Cheney had a closed door session in an attempt to stop a ban on toture. Why would he need to do that if he didn't support torture? Spin it however you like.

If they are captured it should be for a reason. We should already have intelligence about their behavior in order to arrest them in the first place. If we need to torture them thereafter, then somebody's not doing their job. Overall i don't belive we should be the world police anyway. If we arrest terror suspects in the US they should be prosecuted with the same due process that all inmates get.
