Bad news for President Bush
    #2935454 - 07/28/04 05:09 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Bad news for President Bush Americans are anxious about the economy and unhappy about the Iraq (war. The number of soldiers killed will probably hit the psychologically important 1,000 mark before the November election. And in the political horse race, he is tied or worse with Democratic rival John Kerry ?
There's a strong market for change at the White House, lifting Democrats' hopes

"He's in a very tough situation right now," Emory University political scientist Alan Abramowitz said of Bush.

"When you see an incumbent president running even, if not slightly behind his challenger at this stage and with approval ratings at or below 50 percent, those are indicators of vulnerability," Abramowitz said. "If he dropped much further than this, I would have to say he was in very dire straits."

Only 42 percent of Americans support the president's handling of Iraq, and just a third say he has a clear plan to deal with the situation.

"Iraq is Bush's biggest problem in order for him to get elected," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center. More than 900 U.S. service members have died so far and it's likely the toll will hit 1,000 before Nov. 2.

"That's a big moment," Kohut said. "It's going to shine a light on the costs."

Many Americans have lingering concerns about whether the invasion was justified and whether Bush leveled with the nation about the reasons for the war, said Paul Gronke, a political scientist at Reed College in Portland, Ore.

"Those concerns are deep down for many people, and all it takes is some sort of focusing event to bring them back to the surface," Gronke said. "A 1,000th casualty could bring those kind of feelings back to the surface."

Unfortunately for Bush, job losses and economic problems persist in states like Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, all battlegrounds crucial to the election.

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano said Bush's problems go beyond the economy and Iraq to what some feel is stubbornness and lack of openness.

"If you view this election as in part a referendum on the incumbent, he doesn't have right now a long list of positives to say," Napolitano said.

"There is a certain rigidity that is very apparent even to the ordinary voter about the White House and its operation in terms of willingness to listen to other ideas, in terms of willingness to accept and acknowledge the obvious," she said. "There is just a certain rigid quality to it."

He didn't win the last election so it'll probably make no difference.

Can Jeb swing it again?

Can his old boy network around the nation rig it enough again?

Ohh the suspense!

Anyway lets face it the USA needs Iraq too much in attempting to keep its position in the world. The Democrats would and will spout just as much shite to get what they need to keep their pockets lined.

Long live the King!

The difference is that democrats and liberals are smarter than republicans and conservatives, which is why the people of America need to elect John Kerry as President. If they re-elect Bush, everyone has to shut up about 2000 because Bush will have been officially sold and bought; which would mean that in the eyes of the world, the majority of Americans will become victims of generalization.

You worry about becoming a victim of generalization but make an incontestably stupid statement about liberals/Democrat's being smarter than conservatives/Republicans? HA!

^^^^^^Victim Numero Uno

If America elects bush again the rest of the world will be shaking their heads in complete and utter disbelief. Its painfully obvious the guy does not have the mental capactity to run a country...I almost feel sorry for him when he's asked a tough question, you can very nearly hear the wind whistling inside his hollow little head. He reminds me a little bit of Homer Simpson but without Homer's wit and charm!

I'm sorry, but it's only feeble-minded religious convervatives that make non-issues into a 'controversy,' like Stem Cell research, Gay marriage etc. Religious literalism is for the mind without a compass. The blatant seperation of Church and State that is ardently espoused by liberals is a sign to say the least, of intelligence and movement in the proper direction. Don't take my word for it, I hear Shari'ah crap on a daily basis from fellow Muslims.

The Democrats have no choice but to clean up after Bush's haste. It is not a matter of money. His war and reconstruction (attempt) is costingus billions upon billions. But because Iraq will be rebuilt, there is no denying we stand to make gains that are much more valueable than oil...

1 The people of Iraq will reach a better quality of life.
2. Hopefully, a pro-U.S. Iraq in the middle east.
3. The U.S. will regain some of the world respect that was tossed away because of Bush.
