You can often find a BUG ZAPPER at thift stores for $3 or $4 bucks.


They work GREAT.

What about the larvae in the casing layer/substrate?  This gets them before they have a chance to get funky between the gnat sheets and then lay eggs?

I hate gnats....  :mad2:

Bug zapper indoors? *Eek*

Once you have larva in a substrate, you are SOL.

But, these zappers keep the infestation down to minimal, as the larva hatch, they roost on the zapper & get ZAPPED. So, the bastards don't get a chance to LAY MORE EGGS in the substrate.

If left unchecked, you can end up with a CLOUD of the bastards, hovering over - in & around - your grow. :eek: :mad2: :sad:

Only way to kill larva in a substrate, is an overnight DUNK, which DROWNS the bastards. :grin:

this is of course fruiting/colonizing substrate, correct? im sure sterilization and pasteurization take care of larvae in substrates, at least before anything new would be layed in there.

Actually, it's just cheaper to let foodwaste and yardwaste compost than to throw it out.  There's no way I could use all of that substrate for mushrooms.  :lol: 

I mean...let the bugs and microbes eat it rather than sealing it up in a plastic bag for the landfill.  :smile:

Diatomaceous earth in your casings take quick care of gnats, worms, small nuclear devices, etc.

I've tried that.  :sad:  What's your ratio for the casing mix?  And do you hydrate the casing layer?  Is D.E. effective when it's hydrated?  :confused:

Never really thought about it, a sprinkle or so. Yes you can hydrate your casing still, and it is still effective, they are bony skeletons so it doesn't matter.

It does matter. D.E. works by desiccating, lacerating & cutting into small insects or larva's skin, which causes them to lose body fluids, dehydrate & die. It is 98% effective when dry & far less effective when wet.

But, since D.E. absorbs moisture like verm, them releases it very slowly - into a substrate, it is a good thing to add. As it serves a twofold purpose. 1. helping to kill gnats & 2. retaining moisture - which mycelium can draw on - as needed.

Warning. Be sure to use only food grade - D.E.
Any other grade can be, or is carcinogenic.

It doesn't matter if it gets wet, is what I said. And you can use any grade you want, food grade is going to be insanely expensive, just don't do lines of it and you'll be fine.
