Are my colonizers lazy bastards?
    #1977164 - 10/03/03 07:41 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I only inoculated in two holes, maybe that is slowing me down...Anyway, inoculated at 4am Thurs. Sept. 25, took these pics of an average jar at 6:30 pm Today...2 jars seem waterlogged, the rest have a bit more or a bit less colonization than this one. There are two pics one of each side...Is it going, okay? You have factor in the pics do not show the space between the two patches, but I am certain you guys have seen enough jarts to account for that. Sorry if I seem a tad paranoid, it's my first attempt at this rather intriguing hobby.

I think they?re doing fine. However, it looks like your jar?s full of substrate all the way to the lid. Mycelium needs air to grow. Often colonization in jars that are very full will slow down as available oxygen is used up. If this happens, try flipping your jars upside down. This allows the heavier CO2 to drain away. This usually speeds things up.

But, as I said, so far you?re OK.

looks good! knoking them up with only two hole will make the jars coloinize a little slower.

I thought I was supposed to fill up to the top with a layer of dry vermiculite, for the last 2/3- 1 ". Hmm, maybe I goofed...

Yes, you?re supposed to put a layer of vermiculite on top of the substrate BUT leave air on top of that. Don?t panic though, they will just take a bit longer.

air can pass through the verm layer...isnt that the main purpose of this layer...to act as a filter? i wouldt think space between the verm and the lid would be a nice damp breeding ground for contams. also aside from flipping my jars i also put a coffee filter over the lid and secure with a rubber band.

In my experience leaving in some air speeds up the colonization process. If you prepare your jars well, the empty space should be free
of anything that a contaminate could grow on. Contaminates might get in the jar, but the filter will stop them from reaching the substrate.

Also, the space between the filter and the lid isn?t really that damp.
Moisture above the filter escapes through the holes in the lid. Moisture in the substrate is kept in by the filter.

Or so I believe. Would anyone with more experience like to comment on this?

my holes get taped as well...when the jars become almost halfway colonized thats when the tape comes off and filters go on...and just for piece of mind could someone with a bit more experience elaborate for ummiko and myself?

fuck brf, make cracked corn and verm, your half pints take what 3-4 weeks to get fully done? halff a cc in a half pint with cracked corn will be done in a lile over 2 weeks. shits way faster from what my buddy tells me. never touchin the damn brf again, plus in 8 days you can make a qt with a half pint

Hmm...I?ve never used tape myself..:-D

A thought just crossed my mind:
floridaboi, you live in Florida. You probably have warm and moist air all year round, right?
I live in Finland, where it?s a lot colder, and drier. Maybe my methods would fail where you live. Here, they?ve worked perfectly though.

Marvelous man, but... [Re: High_On_Magic]
    #1977392 - 10/03/03 09:46 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Well, not that it matters but just for the record, that is completely irrelevant. The question is about colonization speed and from that has arisen a question concerning space or the lack thereof between the jar lid and the vermiculite topping, my question, and by extension the secondary question, involve BRF jars...

Hey KY, from what I see your jars look fine. In the past I had all kinds of trouble getting jars to grow/finish, the trick I learned was gas exchange. Here's a good link from Anno that explains more about it. Like the others have said, let the jars grow for about 2-3 weeks, remove the tape off the holes, and place a clean(ed) coffee filter over the lid and secure it with the lid's ring. It dosen't sound like much, but your jars will really take off.

As for the rest of the debate, it's not a consern for you at the moment. Good luck.

yeah ill second that, air exchange is important no matter what your substrate is, i had popcorn that had been sitting there for weeks and hardly did a thing, i took the tape off and put a coffee filter, a week later its all white and fuzzy, good luck
