If its fresh, you should lay it on a tarp in the sun for a couple of weeks to leech it. This may help with the gnats. Good Luck.

after one night the poo is close to dry, which i didn't think would be the case because i have a good amount. but yeah, with gnats swarming around the poo, should i still just scoop it out and pasteurize it, im using the microwave tek. Is there anything i could spray the gnast with so they'd die or leave before i pasteurize, any info appreciated.

As stated preveiously, fresh shit should be aged for several weeks before using it. Once it's nicely dried the gnats should no longer be an issue.

You're are going to find out that moist poo in a microwave creates a stench.

A "Q" for you. How do you know that the microwave will reach & maintain a temp that will be effective to pasturize that poo?

You don't. Do you?

A temp of 165 to 180 F for a period of 2 hours on the high end & 3 on the low end is required to "pasturize" something. How do you manage that in a microwave. You dont. Do you?

Wet pasturization can be monitored with a themometer & timed. So can dry heat pasturization of a moist material, in a covered pan or oven bag, in an oven.

My foaf would trust so called microwave pasturization about as much as he would trust Osama with a bag of explosives at a Jewish wedding in NYC.

alright thanks sixtango, now i just wonder why the microwave tek is even on the shroomery faqs if its not effective. I chose it cause it was fast. But the thing is im not really worried about pasteurizing it too much, just getting rid of these gnats, but like they suggested i'll dry it over a weeks time i guess.

That is just IMHO.

It has worked for some & may have worked for others. It didn't for me. I just don't like the fact that you are guestimating if it did the trick or not. With well monitored wet or oven methods, you know.

You can speed drying by shedding the poo up & using a box type fan to blow a high volume of air into it.

You want to pasturize any bulk substrate WELL. Otherwise, you leave it open to colonization of something, you may not like.

It doesnt come out of the horses ass.........pasturized........nor does anyone do it to it  before it gets bagged. :smirk:

So, sure as water is wet, it would require pasturization.

Never saw horse poo bagged. Usualy it is cow manure. Bagged stuff is often 50% waste wood products. If any of that is evergreen type wood, it is not a good thing.

damn man, i fuckin trust in the shroomery usually and the outdoor faq has been giving a lot of information that according to my post isn't good. I based my outdoor (lack of) knowledge on the outdoor faq.

Where in this thread (except just now) did you say your intent was to use the poo outdoors? If used outdoors, you can pasturize, if you wish, or not. Up to you.

My first post said it'd be an outdoor patch...well thats a relief that I don't HAVE to pasteurize, cause i gotta start it quick since my jars are ready. All you suggest is drying it???

It needs to be aged/dried enough that you cannot smell urine like ammonia in it.

Is it ok that the hay remains being soaked until the poo dries, and does it have to be dirt dry?
