gnats
    #1435409 - 04/07/03 07:59 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all, this is my second time growing Psilocybe Cubensis from grow kits.
first time went smooth, excellent big mushrooms and no probs.

the latest kit.
sitting in a fish tank about 12inches wide by 8inches deep and high.
first batch grew fine, a little small but theyre ok. anyway, my kit has now got quite a few gnats/little flies buzzing around it.

on the main shroomery site i came across this:

Fungus gnats (Sciarids) (Lycoriella spp.) and phorids (Megaselia spp.) these seem to be what i have.

the question is;
whats the deal with these pests? can i still harvert the mushrooms and eat them?
is it safe? or should i leave them and be better safe than sorry.
cheers, mike.

If the weather conditions are ok in your area, I would do an outdoor tek...
flies in the growbox are really annoying...and would contaminate fresh cakes!

i would say that as long as the shrooms look healthy when harvested then eat them. your bigger problem lies in getting rid of the gnats. do some searching. some tested solutions included coffee grounds, and brandy/cognac traps. you will definitely have to clean up VERY well.

outdoor tek is impossible; i live in england

the mushrooms still look healthy and are growing strong. i will look into getting rid of them now. thanks.

let me make some clarification. not sure what you mean about the outdoors. never mentioned that. gnats are going to lay eggs and they carry contaminants. Now, i am assuming your project was nearing completion when the gnats appeard which means that the chances of the gnats bringing contams in has been decreased. However, who wants to eat a shroom full of the equivalent of gnat maggots? Just inspect closely. Once you have harvested you will need to clean up VERY well. This means removing all equipment and cleaning the area with bleach. Clean all equipment with bleach. PC any equipment you can. Kinda like a reboot for your project. You have to make the area na dth eequipment inhospitable and unattractive to the gnats. They are persistant bastards and you have to work really hard to get them gone once they arrive. The single best thing I ever did to keep them away was install afan at the door to my project room blowing staright down from the top. This is what many warehouse have to keep bugs from coming in from outside.

The first reply to my question mentioned an outdoor tek.

the mushrooms are growing in a sealed fish tank, the gnats cannot and have not escaped. i will bleach my fish tank when all the mushrooms have been harvested or if the gnat problem gets out of hand.

my pet dog is drying the 'gnat batch' mushrooms for me, i will inspect them closely when wet and dry for any possible contaminants.

many thanks for your help. mike.
