Fungus Gnat Prevention???
    #4578484 -

can anyone give my friend some fungus gnat prevention tips?

he lost 3 cases after the 1st flush due to these fuckers....he prolle could have kept them but they were overcoming the casing enclosures pretty well as the casing layer!

he is gonna add some neem powder to the next casing....not sure if that will help but will try.....

he was using coir casing with vermiculite.

any help would be great...

also can these things spread disease or anything to mature shrooms?

Gnats are the PITS. They lay eggs in the casing material or substrate, the eggs turn into larva (which eat substrate & fruits), the larva hatch into more gnats, so on & so forth.

Sticky strips (like for flies) help. Electric bug zappers - also help. The only way to 100% rid the growing area of gnats, is to clean it out, sanitize it (I use a steam cleaner)& start over.

Then, try to make sure - NONE - ever gain access to the fruiting chamber - again.

This is one good reason why - pasteurization of a bulk substrate - is important. To kill any eggs - larva that may be in it.

Just FYI - Lil frigging gnats can inject eggs right through a filter/patch - on a bag, or wiggle through a filter/patch. So, if h/poo is in contact with the filter/patch - you can end up with eggs/larva/gnats inside a sealed autoclave bag.

Or, gnat got to it -when- you spawned the h/poo, or while it was colonizing.

You seldom if ever see them in cold winter weather. But, places like hot houses can have them all year around. They end up in potted green/house plants, then head out from there.

Note, commercial size electronic BUG ZAPPER.

Bug zapper was on a timer that powered it up during dark cycle.

Diatomaceous earth might help. Get the food grade, not the pool stuff. It will slice right through those little bastards.

I had those little fuckers invade my last cannabis grow , luckily I got it under control before they were able to do any damage.

I bought these things called mosquito dunks , they're little circles of cork impregnated with bacteria that get into the gnat larva and eat away their stomach lining. You just let them soak in water 24hours and in my case water the soil.

I used those sticky, yellow traps and all they succeeded in was showing me just how many gnats were in the room. All 8 traps were covered to the point that they looked solid black. I would say not to even try to get rid of them but rather prevent them from infesting in the first place. They multiply like crazy. FYI though, the females dont lay eggs in the dark.
