The "Ego" Thread

So what do you all define as ego? How do you think ego is developed and how do you think it reflects on the human mind and spirit? Is it "wrong" to poses the characteristics of ego? Or wait "wrong" is ego "am I right?"

ego is the baseline you that is a rational thinking being.....

i guess i'm going more with a psychological approach.

ego pretty much traps you in rationality and shields you from emotions, etc.... ego reflects your conditioning.... so you know, on the one hand ego keeps you from being a slave to emotional drives, but it can also prevent you from tuning in to yourself on a spiritual level, perhaps.

I'm pretty sure in college, I learned ego is your sense of self....

That was a while ago, though, and I'm sure things have changed. Here's the definition in my handy dandy dictionary:

ego |??g?| noun ( pl. egos) a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance : a boost to my ego. ? Psychoanalysis the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity. Compare with id and superego . ? an overly high opinion of oneself : some major players with really big egos. ? Philosophy (in metaphysics) a conscious thinking subject.

Personally, I think without the ego, one would cease to exist. It's definately not wrong to possess an ego while you are alive.

I don't believe "ego death" is possible to live through. "Ego loss", yes, because loss doesn't equate to complete loss or death. If we have no sense of self, we would not exist. I've been so high I forgot my name, where I was, and even that I am a living breathing thing, but I still understood that I was something. I was still experiencing "something". I think if we actually experienced "ego death", it would sever whatever keeps our consciousness tied to our physical being, and there would be no going back. Maybe the ego is the thing that ties our consciousness to our body? Since we wouldn't know that we existed, or have any consciousness, we wouldn't know what it was like to exist, and would therefore be gone forever. Unless maybe if you have some sort of spiritual belief, but you'd need to have some sort of consciousness to have spiritual beliefs!

Ego is the conscious, waking mind.

It is the part of 'us' that puts limits on ourselves and our reality.

It is where "personality" comes from

Ego is what makes us 'individuals'

The idea is not ego loss. Ego is not bad. It is a tool of consciousness.

The idea is ego transcendence.

The Id

The Id (Latin, "it" in English, "Es" in the original German) represented primary process thinking ? our most primitive, need-gratification impulses. It is organized around the primitive instinctual drives of sexuality and aggression. In the id, these drives require instant gratification or release. Freud borrowed the term Id from the "Book of the Id" by Georg Groddeck, a pathfinder of psychosomatic medicine.

The Ego

In Freud's view the Ego mediates between the Id, the Superego, and the external world to balance our primitive drives, our moral ideals and taboos, and the limitations of reality ("Ego" means "I" in Latin?the original German word Freud applied was "Ich".) Although in his early writings Freud equated the ego with our sense of self, he later began to portray it more as a set of psychic functions such as reality-testing, defense, synthesis of information, intellectual functioning, memory, and the like.

The Superego

The Superego stands in opposition to the desires of the Id. The Superego is based upon the internalization of the world view, norms and mores a child absorbs from parents and the surrounding environment at a young age. As the conscience, it includes our sense of right and wrong, maintaining taboos specific to a child's internalization of parental culture.

it's yourself. it's what distinguishes your from other people. it's your pride, your self esteem, your self-importance. it controls your specific behavior during a certain event. your ego is unique to only you.

Think of it like this, and I hate to use this example, but it illustrates the point well. In "The Matrix", when Neo first enters the construct, Morpheus tells him that people actually look the way they perceive themselves. That is like the ego- the part of the mind that constructs reality based on its perception of itself. The ego is what gives "I am" meaning.

Most people have some idea of themselves, as a human being, with certain attributes, and their relationship to other things. Now imagine completely shattering or removing any of those traits. Imagine not being able to comprehend individual beings, or not knowing what a human was. The ego, which bases itself on variations of these things, might just spazz out. Or, it might not even occur that it should exist. After all, if you have no idea that humans exist, why cling to the belief that you are one?

If so, yes, that's the goal of our lives!
The ultimate would be just total ego transcendance, which is what I believe is what we acheive when when our time comes.
I can't believe I didn't get people pissed off with my post!
I'm pleased!
I don't believe we could totally surpass our egoes completely without severing our ties to physical reality.  Pretty thoroughly, yes, but not completely.  A good goal for a lifetime would be to become as much of a part of our surroundings, and not too absorbed in self as much as possible.  I don't know if that makes much sense.  I'm not exactly a philosopher!  I just think becoming a part of everything else is good.
