The Peace Corps
    #4886048 -

Since I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life when I get out of college, I figured I would give a look at the Peace Corps.

Does anyone have any experience with the Corps or know anyone who does?

My mom wanted me to join. I think.

Maybe not though, it was a thing where you can work for them and go to school at the same time.

Nah, you couldn't go to school while working for them. It's 27 months, so there's no way you could do both. I'm really thinking about doing this since my life has no direction at the moment.

Ah. I must be thinking of the California Conservation Corp then.

What would you be doing?

I have no clue. I was reading things about it on their site, but I think regardless of what I'll be doing, it will bust my ass.

No way man. The peace coorps is kinda fucked up. Maybe look into it a little. My best friend went to africa after graduating college. She came back after six monthes, they just kinda dropped her in the middle of no where with no real goal other than to spread english and create a social and economic hierarchy. They don't get a whole lot done. (from what I've heard)

I hear, from people with experience in the Peace Corps, that it's a very bureaucratic environment, lots of paperwork and people to answer to, not many results you see firsthand no matter how hard you work at it. I've heard others call it America's PR firm.

their website is a great place to start to get info about them.

They only accept people with useful skills that can be proven to them with credentials. I.E. you either need a college degree or several years of documented work experience. Sadly the corps is a bit picky as to who can join. I'm not sure of the details, but a certain time of service in the corps can I beleive allow you to have certain kinds of student loans that are still outstanding be pardoned and left unpaid.

The peace corps is unfortunately also mired knee deep in bullshit. So you need to spend a rather long time committed to it before you can really get a sense of having helped the earth.

If you want to give back to the world you're more likely to do so through work as a missionary than in the peace corps. It has many of the same SNAFU situations that the UN does. One of which is the lack of giving a shit about anything other than policy.

Actually making a difference is not a necessity for me going, but would be a plus. I just want to get the fuck out of here.

If you just want to get out into the world you may find the peace corps to be too much hassle for what it gives back. 1- the entry requirements are too high and 2- generally the peace corps is only rewarding to those who really want to be selfless.

Don't get me wrong, I'll bust my ass and help people. Just, if in the end I don't feel like I made a huge difference, it won't break my heart.

I'll have an undergraduate degree by the time I apply.

Oh well if you're willing to work hard and not always see much gratification then yes, the peace corps will probably work out for you.

And look into the student loan thing, you might get to save a grip of cash while you're at it.

With a college degree you should be set to go. They prefer college degree AND work experience, but I think they accept people just graduating from college.

To be honest, I've considered joining after college. But I've also considered just putting off college and getting the fuck into the military so I can use my GI bill to pay for college later on... and use my government pay check to buy a car and get up on my own damn 2 feet.

I've been thinking about joining the air force just because I know it's guarenteed support. You get paid, you get food, they pay for schooling, and you get hands on experience. I'm working on my computer engineering major right now and I'm starting to HATE this shit because of all the book work. I don't want to do book work, I actually want to do some hands on stuff and get REAL experience. So, i figured the air force would be a good place to look for that.

Fuck the army. The air force needs concrete to land on, which compared to the army's usual mud pit accomodations makes for a much nicer enlistment. Plus fewer people throw grenades at a guy who, let's say, fuels airplanes hundreds or thousands of miles from the combat zone.

Or if you're a badass, join the Marines... first to die! or is that fight... same thing.

If you are too scared to fight, then why join the military at all? The country doesn't need any more ammo for the weirdos that bitch about the "poor" soldiers that have to fight because they signed up in hopes of an education and blah blah blah.

The Air Force is for softies. Unless you are going to be a pilot.

oh, I don't think any branch of the military is for softies. But you're right, you shouldn't join at all if you're not willing to die for your country. I just don't see any reason to increase the odds that you will, unless, as I said, you're a badass... in which case, molon labe, join the marines.
