I got pretty serious about joining myself once upon a time...but that dream died shortly after talking with one of the reps and finding out just how many loops you gotta jump through to get involved. Depending on where you want to go and what sort of stuff you plan on doing to help out once you get there, there can be all sorts of BS requirements you have to meet.

If you're really serious though, I'd suggest choosing some crappy ass shit-hole of a forth world contry that no one in the right mind would ever want to willfully visit, and proposing to do some kind of good deed that won't cost the organization any more money then the initial one way ticket to get there.....you might actually have a chance of getting chosen if you take that route. Anything else though, and they'll likely tell ya you're thinking too big and trying to do too much (translation: pick something we can realistically exampnd our own wallets with, and still give the illusion that you actually put that money to good use)

so you get to pretty much choose what you want to do and where you want to go, and then they pay to send you there????

what's the catch?

The catch is that there are a lot of people out there that seem to think this whole program can be used to give em a free ride to some foriegn country where certain laws held here in the US don't apply...if you get my drift. So they're real selective towards the type of people they choose for these things. The actual *requirements* they have aren't all they difficult to meet, but simply meeting the minimal requirements certainly won't gaurentee you a spot.

Let's just say that the sort of people they're actually looking for are well-educated, mid-thirties, do-gooder types...who just so happen to speak a dozen or so different languages, can dig a well with their feet while they shear a goat, milk it, and knit a throw rug out of it's flece with their hands AND tutor an entire village on 18 different subjects all at the same time. I think there's also some sort of clause that gives a bit more leeway to anyone that adopts some kid named (akward clicking sounds) and renames him bob...but I might be mistaken about that one.
