which do you prefer?
i've tried KDE, GNOME, fluxbox, and xcfe.
i prefer KDE for the most part. people tell me it's bloated. i don't get it. maybe a little bit... i use fluxbox when performance is a priority, but the difference seems pretty small, and worth it for KDE's functionality and looks most of the time. i never got into GNOME.

I did a framerate check of Quake 4 under "failsafe" (an Xterm with no real window manager running) and under "KDE". Failsafe got 42 fps while KDE got 40 fps. I don't think KDE really sucks that much juice.

I use Gnome. I've breifly used KDE.
I don't really have reason, it's just what I'm used to. I'd try Predator's suggestion, but it sounds significantly different - like, it might be better, eventually, but it'd take a while to get used to.

kde is too much...eyecandy...for me.

I would rather use a straight console with no WM than use a barebone WM like Ion. I mean Ion is alright, but so is fluxbox, openbox, windowmaker, etc... I used Ratpoison for a long time. I finally decided that if I am using an interface it should be a complete interface with a proper file manager. The difference in resource use is minimal. When using a straight console most of your resources are idle...so why the fuck did I build this near supercomputer behemoth if I am not going to utilize it's resources? I use KDE (though I do like gnome also)because it is a total solution. I will say that when they polish up e17 I will be on the wagon. I ran it for a while installed from elive and I thought it was awesome...but it had a few annoying bugs.

I've been using Enlightenment 16 for years, and I accept no substitute. I'm really excited about E17, but I'm waiting for it to get into more polished form before I upgrade.

i run gnome. kde... ran it for a while on a knoppix set-up that i built, but i didn't like it at all.

i'm giving GNOME a try again. i'm liking it so far actually. i may just switch. it's better supported by my distribution and most of the stuff i use are GTK apps.

I used to swear by fluxbox, but when I tried DroplineGnome for slackware I decided to give gnome a try. I enjoyed the minimalism of fluxbox but gnome isn't too much by any means. And obviously it's as customizeable as you want it to be, but that goes without saying ...
I prefer the look and feel of gnome to kde as well.

alright. i think i'm gonna stick with gnome for a little while and see how it goes.
one major hitch so far:
sound.
i used to have problems with sound in KDE until i started using aRts for everything. after that, no sound problems.
using gnome, i'm getting the same kind of sound problems i used to get on KDE long ago. processes blocking the soundcare from other processes, weird behavior when opening .mo3s.... what do you do for sound in gnome? i had sound working flawlessly in KDE just by using aRts. it's all fucked up in gnome.

I use alsa ... always have and I've never tried anything else.

I'm not all that technical, so when it comes to choosing, I just went with looks. Gnome is ugly as shit. I tried dressing it up all nice. It was still shit. KDE is beautiful and elegant and is easier for me to use.

i fixed it using the unofficial 5.04 guide. works fine now. just had to edit a couple files. that's the sort of thing that should be working correctly by default by now. hopefully it'll be fixed in dapper.
i think having the sound previews on in nautilus made things a little flakey too.

that KDE desktop isn't using anything special to look like that. i just set the panel to the smallest width and told it to 'expand to fit contents'. i added a little transparency to the panel and menus. you can do all of that without special software through KDE's configuration tools.
right now i'm using gnome. it's supported a heck of a lot better (for now) on ubuntu and most of the apps i use are GTK. firefox, gaim, thunderbird, nicotine, synaptic... they all look better when running gnome.

That's what I tried dressing it up with. No matter how much gloss I added, it still seemed off. kde seems more integrated. Also, I do like kde apps better. amarok, konqueror, kopete, KTorrent. They're all great.
