Greenpeace fined for reef damage

Environmental group Greenpeace has been fined almost $7,000 (?4,000) for damaging a coral reef at a World Heritage site in the Philippines.

Their flagship Rainbow Warrior II ran aground at Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, in the Sula Sea, 650km (400 miles) south-east of Manila.

Park officials said almost 100 sq m (1,076 sq ft) of reef had been damaged.

Greenpeace agreed to pay the fine, but blamed the accident on outdated maps provided by the Philippines government.

"The chart indicated we were a mile and a half" from the coral reef when the ship ran around, regional Greenpeace official Red Constantino told AFP news agency.

"This accident could have been avoided if the chart was accurate," he said, adding, however, that Greenpeace felt "responsible" for the damage.

We saved the reef before we destroyed it.

I guess that mission was a net loss...

extended out to see 1 mile since the last time the

Nah, I think they are trying to claim that the chart (map) they had was simply incorrect. Guess the captain wasn't paying any attention to the depth finder or marker buoys. Living in the caribbean, I do a lot of sailing, and every shallow I have ever seen has been marked... and yes, boats still manage to hit them. Sounds to me like they are simply trying to spin the blame to somebody else rather than taking responsibility for screwing up... typical (of people in general).

Classic Greenpeace Idiocy

What other "idiocy" do you think Greenpeace do? Is trying to save the environment idiotic?

My experience with Greenpeace has been that their heart is usually in the right place, but they're not the most informed people with sound policies. Too gung-ho.

Indeed. Serious environmentalists would do better to look into the Sierra Club.

ROFL, i hope Parker and Stone see this news report. That could make an amazing episode, not just about greenpeace but all those groups which try to help and end up hurting their own cause.

I don't know about you folks, but I always listen to the guy that drives around in his SUV telling people with SUVs how bad they are for the environment.
