Pereskiopsis care

I acquired 10 Pereskiopsis yesterday which I plan on using as root stock for grafting Lophophora, Trichocereus etc but can't find much info on the care of this species. David Rushforth says 'they need very generous treatment with good soil, plenty of water and feed, and warmth.' (http://www.living-rocks.com/pereskiopsis.htm)
By good soil does he mean potting soil or soil specificaly for cacti???
Cheers

I treat them just like regular plants and not like cactus.
They like lots of water and fertilizer. Water every 3 days or so.. never let them dry out.
I have mine in a high quality potting soil with a little sand/aeration material added.

Cool.
I'd read they like lots of water and fertilizer but was unclear about the soil type.
Thanks for the info!

I got my 10 Pereskiopsis plants for free off some old fella on a cacti and succulent message board. He originally obtained them from the grafting guru David Rushforth (http://www.living-rocks.com/pereskiopsis.htm). I don't know about sources for Pereskiopsis in Canada as I live in the UK.

I got my supply in the US from Mesa Gardens and from Bob Smoleys.
I think Bob will ship them internationally..... but it is expensive.
Can't help you out in Canada.

In Canada: I got my Pereskiopsis here: http://www.ethnogarden.com/cart/ I don't know if he has it on his site yet, so you may have to email him as I did.
Edit: Actually it up here http://www.ethnogarden.com/cart/index.pl/catid_88/proid_285

treat them like regular plant not like cactus, bad statement. give them a fast draining soil, and let the pots drain between waterings. have the soil a hair basic rather than acidic. you can water them as soon as you put them in dirt and they root alot easyer than pedros do. but they need the cycle of wet to dry to stimulate the root growth. cacti send out roots during dry periods in search of water. when i was first introduced to this plant, i was told that i didnt have to let the pot dry out between waterings, my pereskiopsis is almost coming back. it looks like its about ready to pup, but im still pissed off and have lost alot of growth time due to a "pro's" post about growing it.....

treat them like shit, they don't really care, maybe just were abouts you are, but i water them about once every couple of weeks or so and such they don't really care more of a weed than a succulant or cacti.

pereskiopsis is a succulent plant, its in between cacti and regular plants, but definetly a desert dweller.
the info in the link above is relative to cacti, so compared to a cactus it requires alot of water and fertiliser, but still less then an ordinary houseplant.
im with ST34(etc), water them like a regular plant, then let em dry out good before watering again and respect the slow growing winter period.

Dude...pereskiopsis is a cactus...a true cactus, not a succulent.
And I don't think they come from the desert, but a jungle or something. I could be wrong about that though.

a cactus? no way! lol
how is the distinction between succulents and cacti made exactly? and if it were a true succulent it would not be fit for grafting?

Yep, cactus. But it does take more water than normal ones.

No idea.

No, you can't graft a cactus to a succulent and vice versa. Cacti can only be grafted to other cacti.

You can read about succulents and cacti here :
http://www.answers.com/topic/cactus
Says for Pereskiopsis :
Quote:
Two genera, Pereskia and Pereskiopsis, do however retain large, non-succulent leaves 5-25 cm long, and also non-succulent stems; they are possibly primitive genera, thought to be closely similar to the plants that cacti evolved from.
...it's like a primitive kind of cacti.

Not to mention i have never scene a succulent with 100's of sharp spines before.
It roots readily and noticed that tip cuttings or stem cuttings with off shoots work best. Tried to grow a couple stick cuttings with no leaves no growth tips and it failed.

DO NOT GET YOUR PERESKIOSIS FROM ETHNOGARDEN. IT IS AN UTTER AND COMPLETE RIPOFF.
You can order from Divine Cactus in the UK for much cheaper. They ship from europe yet their shipping cost is LESS than ethnogarden. Keep in mind I live in Canada, so that should NOT be the case.
I would go with Divine Cactus for sure. Go with ethnogarden only if you are super super super rich and don't mind paying 250% more.
