Could be, dont eat it, even if it was edible, why would you want to eat it? It wont get you high.

gee, I don't know....because some people on here are interested in all types of mushrooms, not just the ones that "get you high".

psssst.....some people actually like to eat mushrooms.  It's crazy, I know, but it is true. :crazy2:

Boletus badius is a possibility - your photo matches the description for that species. Using Moser's key, the test you need to try is putting a drop or two of fresh ammonia on the cap skin - for B. badius the skin should not turn blue or blue-green.

VolvoxBox, it definitely is not Boletus satanas. That species has red tubes that fade to orange as they age and a massive, bulbous stem. Also, B. satanas is not lethal, it just causes severe gastrointestinal distress. Victims might wish they'd die so it would stop, but only somebody already very ill might be at risk of death from eating them.

Looks like Boletus badius to me. The pores should stain bluey green to begin with then fade to brown eventualy.

I've eaten a ton of those this season, pretty tasty  :smile:

yeh me wrong it grows in greenwood i didnt noticed the first time ive been too drunk, too bad many of them are full of worms you need to seek for young speciments.
and btw that not even a bolete not even a badius.
boletes have phat sterm and leccinum have longer sterms.
This is xerocomus of some kind. probably xerocomus chrysenteron.
Make sure you peal off that cap skin before you eat. The place where you found it should have Lactarius Deliciosus also kewl mushrooms for salads.

What a load of rubbish!

I pick Boletus badius almost daily at the moment and many have long, skinny stipes!

Take a look at this pic of Boletus piperatus (I use these as seasoning.)

You call this a fat stem?

For your information, Xerocomus chrysenteron and Xerocomus badius are now referred to as Boletus chrysenteron and Boletus badius so thats kinda fucked up your stem theory  :smirk:

Also, Boletus chrysenteron is commonly referred to as the red cracked bolete, I come across these daily and there is no mistaking them. There is no sign of cracking in the pic Stefan posted.

Lol stefan, what do you mean not serious? Would you want to find mushrooms that arent active and eat them, and risk eating poiseness ones? I guess its just my opinion, but thats pretty nasty :/ Id rather die eating the wrong mushrooms, mistaking them for being active, but mistaking mushrooms that are just edible is absurd.

I mostly pick gourmet mushrooms (as well as the odd active  :wink:) and have never been poisoned once.

I've read that the majority of mushroom poisonings in America are by teenagers wanting to "trip" and eating random mushrooms  :crazy:

It's worth it to me to eat edibles. I've tried more different species than I can even name.. I try new stuff every year pretty much. It's been going on for 10+ years at least and I still haven't been poisoned.
I guess the first couple times that I ate my own finds, I was a little nervous but that wore off a long time ago. I am sure enough of myself that I don't even think of poisoning anymore.
If anything I'll probably end up getting poisoned from the mushrooms absorbing chemical waste from the environment (since there is a lot of that around) before I end up eating something that's genetically poisonous.
Anyways I guess it's all a matter of opinion. The local mycology groups/societies that I've been to seek edibles. Most of the people that I meet, joined to learn more about picking wild edible mushrooms.

Same here. I'm out on a group foray in the morning actually (if I can wake up in time!  :crazy:)

Last week someone described them as being more like family get-togethers than fungi forays, always the same friendly faces  :smile:

Of the people who call the Poison Centers, the majority are people who have misidentified edible mushrooms. One of the most common problems is people who compare their finds to the photos or drawings in a book. Since beginners usually don't know what things they should be looking at they overemphasize features like what color the cap surface is and ignore important features like ring zones on the stem and spore print color.

The second most common reason is people who want to get high, and by far the most common mushrooms in these cases are Amanita muscaria and A. pantherina. Look at how many threads there are out here by people who seem determined to try these species for themselves. Some of these people will be the next ones to end up in an emergency room or calling their local Poison Center when the symptoms aren't what they were hoping for.

The really tragic ones are the people who mistake the really dangerous mushrooms like Galerina marginata for various Psilocybe species. If they seek medical care they usually survive, but the fear of admitting that they were attempting to do something illegal causes many of these victims to avoid medical attention. Fortunately, they rarely consume enough to kill themselves.


Mushroom hunting for edibles is a great group activity. I lead numerous forays from the Denver area each year. It's great fun, you get to be in beautiful outdoor areas, and you often end up with something to make a nice side dish for dinner.

I still haven't been poisoned yet, either, but I don't foresee ever not being a bit nervous about trying a new species. Having been around people who were poisoned, it doesn't look like any way I want to spend an evening.

The social part of hunting edibles is truly great. I have met some of the most interesting people I know through mushroom hunting.

Don't entirely neglect the non-edible mushrooms. Studying them just to learn more is also pretty rewarding. It has led me to associations with a number of professional mycologists, and they are really interesting people to hunt with. Also humbling. It reminds me of how little I know when I find something that I have no idea what it is and one of them names it at a glance.

if it looks like a hamburger bun on a thick stalk its boletes for sure.. although there is about 200 species of these some poisonous.. so dont eat it unless you know which species it is
