It's possible that they are. They are certainly from the genus Leccinum.

When you cut them in half, did they first have a pinkish to reddish bruising before they turned purplish? That small difference would distinguish between L. aurantiacum and L. insigne. There are other very similar Leccinum species also.

On the negative side, we know that there is an undescribed Leccinum species that resembles these that has caused some poisonings. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

If you want to eat them, cut one in half vertically (as you already have), and be sure to save half in a paper bag in your refrigerator. Be very sure to cook them thoroughly - Leccinums are poisonous raw. If you don't get sick, then you have more mushroom you can eat later. If you do get sick, there are people who will very much want the other half of your specimen - professionals who are trying to get specimens of the undescribed species that is making people sick.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks Toxic man,

It did not have any pink or reddish bruising at all. Ohh and the spore print turned out light brown.

what about Leccinum manzanitae?

According to my references L. manzanitae only grows under madrone or manzanita. So if it wasn't growing near those then it isn't.

Thanks again Toxic. I don't think I'll be eating these however. The prospect of mushroom sickness doesn't appeal to me  sorry researchers, no specimens from me :p

I found hundreds of them over this past weekend. Could have gathered pounds. I do not eat them for the same reasons Toxicman mentioned. There is also a simliar one called L. Fibrillosum but it grows under confiers.

Do you know if this toxic Leccinum is known to exist in Europe?

I'm not aware of any poisonings in Europe. On the other hand, lots of the rules I'm familiar with that tell me which mushrooms will be edible won't work in Europe or Asia. If you want good information on edibility you need to contact fellow Europeans. One of the most common causes of mushroom poisonings is people who learned the rules in one place (e.g., Asia) going to another (e.g., US) and then still using those rules. That's how most Amanita phalloides poisonings happen in the US.

An example of one of these rules is that we have *no* deadly Russula species here. There is at least one deadly Russula species in Asia (and Europe, too, if I remember correctly).

Happy mushrooming!
