Do edible boletes ever turn blue?

Found this beautiful bolete today. It has a reddish-brown cap and tight white sponge. It didn't initially stain blue but over time has done so. Is it ok to eat? Click on link to see pic. Thanks so much in advance any assistance!

I don't have a facebook account so I can't see the pic,  but sometimes the bluing ones are edible.  Don't eat yours until someone else answers though!

You have a Leccinum, not BOletus edulis, but another Bolete relative, that seeing as it is a Birch Bolete or Manzanita Bolete, it should be edible. Wait for a TI though.

I read some similar posts and tasted mine before spitting it out. It was sweet and mushroomy and tasted good! Hope that info helps. Thanks!

Not B. edulis.  Definitely Leccinum sp. looks like Leccinum manzanitae.  What kind of tree did you find it under?

Looks like Leccinum scabrum to me. And to answer your bluing bolete question - I eat bluing boletes all the time. Most are pefectly fine to eat, at least here in Europe.

MendoJ, people have become sick and some died after eating red and orange capped Leccinum in North America. In North America some of the red and orange capped Leccinum are now thought to be toxic.

Though these poisonings are rare and the mechanism for the poisoning is not known, I'm not eating any red or orange capped Leccinums.

There are red ones with yellow pores that grow near me at the end of August and I eat them. They're delicious and those ones stain blue.

ya its not like the blueing signifies  activeness like in a Psilocybe sp. and it doesnt mean poisonous either. its just a macroscopic feature we can use to distinguish one bolete from the next.combined with pore color,cap and stipe color,pore print, and habitat......it still is hella hard to id some boletes! :lol: alan posted a thread about blueing in Boletes which you should read.

Ha, I eat Boletus bicolor and a couple of other bluing boletes, I wouldn't eat the bluing bolete that MendoJ found.

Thanks for all the replies. Still don't know if I should eat it or not! In answer to some questions, I found it near some scrub brush here in Northern California. There were manzanitas nearby. The cap was really more brown than orange, and the taste was very sweet and mushroomy when I sampled it before spitting it out...

Its Leccinum manzanitae and is edible and good.

Thanks, Alan! :smile: Made some soup with all of the hedgehogs and yellow foot chanterelles and tossed it in last night. Didn't want to taste it until it was confirmed. Will try some tonight!
