Iraqi Constitution Passes! WOO HOO!

If you hit that link, you go to the front internet page of the Washington Post.

On that page right now you will see a picture of Cindy Sheehan up on the top front, bowing in "sober silence" in front of the White House.

The big article of the day for the Washington Post is a three page expose on the American death toll hitting 2000.

And also as a sideline, you have an article entitled "Sunnis Failed to Defeat Iraq Constitution".

So what is the big news today? It isn't that the future of democracy in Iraq looks bright. Who cares what we have been fighting for. It isn't the fact Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds have come together to write and ratify the most progressive and free constitution in Arab history. That stuff is just trivial and not "newsworthy". The big news is a staged Cindy Sheehan photo-op, another recount on the "mounting death toll" (as if a death toll could ever reverse itself and go down!), and that the Sunnis had failed to defeat the Constitution.

Nothing to see here but bad news, move along please. Move along.

We may live on the same planet, but many of us still live in different worlds. When I look at that paper, I see the biggest news since 9-11 going unreported.

I don't know what to say. The whole media bias thing gets old and tired. I know the country is divided. I don't like it any more than you do on the other side. That Iraqi Constitution is the first step to bringing our kids back home. It is news. It is front page news. It is bigger than another Cindy Sheehan photo-op, and it is bigger than another few people dying yesterday. It is a big fucking deal. It is the start of the only fucking way we can ever get out of that place.

And for people so opposed to being there in the first place, that would seem to me to be even bigger news.

I am like a child, because I continue to be amazed by the media. No great wonder why people grow old and cynical with headlines like that.

In protest, tonight I have decided to drink Rum straight from the bottle.

other great news is that the iraqi population still sees attacks against US troops as warranted, dont see US as providing security but prolonging violence, many reject the voting results and process since it was done under occupation without international observers and audits were done because of abnormalities and also the fact that a great number of people voted without reading the constitution, theres still factional conflict, and a lot of people are going to be mad on all sides when they find out what this constitution really says.

You changed my mind. These elections have been the wrong course. Maybe this Constitution is a bad idea. Freedom and liberty have been grossly overrated.

I no longer think that the solution in Iraq is tied to Iraqi self government and self sufficiency. This news today doesn't matter one bit. I now believe that the solution in Iraq is tied to criticizing the Bush administration.

I can see clearly now the rain is gone.

I just dont see how the iraqi constitution being passed is going to make the insurgents throw down their weapons and quitting because they finally have freedom. Infact any guarantee on paper isnt gonna really secure anything in Iraq. Especially considering each political faction have their own crooked ambitions. Its the perfect mixture for a civil war.

Turkey has a democratic form of government. The vast majority of Turkey's citizens are Muslim.

True but they are a different sect of Islam and they still suffer attacks from Kurdish Peshmerga that hide back into Iraq.

Iraq is unstable anyway you look at it. Do you think when the shiites get in the majority of the government that they arent going to cozy with neighboring Iran, and how angry will sunnis be knowing that their is cozy relations with Iran.
